Sonatina for Oboe and Piano was written in 2016. It consists of three movements, each being a letter of personal homage. The first movement titled Spring Festival is a tribute to Beijing, my birthplace. The music opens with a fanfare passage by oboe that is immediately echoed by piano. The brief dialogue quickly leads to the first main theme of the movement: an up-tempo, rhythmically vibrant melody reminiscent of a Chinese folk dance. The second theme in a slower tempo, is clumsy, somewhat crude yet with abundant charm and humor. The first theme reappears before the movement ends on the uplifting fanfare, much similar to how it all started. The second movement titled Ballade is a letter to my beloved wife, whose elegance and passion inspired me to write this lyrical, through composed piece as a manifest of love. The third movement titled Child’s Play is dedicated to one of my closest childhood friends, himself a terrific oboist. The movement is loosely in an A-B-A form. The two outer sections feature a playful melody in neo-classical style and are separated by a casual and whimsical middle section.

Jules Demersseman was born on January 9, 1833 in Hondschoote, a small town in the north of France now near the border of Belgium. He entered the Paris Conservatory in 1844 in the class of Jean-Louis Tulou and won a first prize in flute in 1845. Demersseman had a career as a pedogogue and soloist, often performing his own compositions. A close friend of Adolphe Sax, he wrote some of the first works ever written for the saxophone, as well as for the saxhorn and for Sax‘s valved trombone, most of which were published by Sax himself.. Demersseman died in Paris on December 1, 1866 at the age of 33. The work is in the form of a Cavatina and Cabaletta, a vocal aria form used in Bel Canto operas during the life of Demersseman. In this form, a slow, expressive and ornamented melody (the cavatina), usually with solo cadenzas is followed by a faster, usually more dramatic but equally florid section (the cabaletta). Famous examples of this form include the aria Una voce poco fa in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia and Casta diva ... Ah! bello a me ritorno in Bellini‘s, Norma. An introspective and meditative work with a lot of dynamic and phrasing nuance. Works well for church meditations or recital encores. Background Op.11/2 Alto Clarinet version. First of all, Scriabin composed mostly for the solo piano and also the orchestra. This is probably because he was a gifted pianist and therefore certainly appreciated the piano. Scriabin grew up in the late Romantic period, consequently, he was fond of the great piano masters of the time. As a result, he wrote his first noteworthy compositions in the manner of Chopin and Liszt. Forms Likewise, Scriabin used many of the same forms as Chopin. These certainly include the étude, prelude, nocturne, and even the mazurka. In contrast, as he developed his own sense of style his music became more and more unusual. So, the last five of his Piano Sonatas do not have a key signature and therefore lean towards atonality. Philosophy Scriabin also developed a keen interest in philosophy and likewise poetry. He was above all particularly fascinated by Nietzsche, Delville, and Blavatsky. Consequently, he finally established his own ideas about metaphysics and certainly mysticism. Scriabin consequently advanced theories about the relationship between color and musical keys. Synesthesia He also may have experienced a condition called synesthesia where he could probably sense a response created from a different stimulus. Therefore, it was almost as if he could see music and hear colors. Scriabin, therefore, arranged the colors in a circle similar to the circle-of-fifths and assigned each key area a color. Finally, he assigned the key of C to the color red, while the key of G was orange. Similarly, he assigned D to yellow, A to green, and so forth. Strangely, he did not differentiate between major and minor key colors. Multimedia Hence, his ability to translate colors into music certainly gave Scriabin a most noteworthy interest in creating multimedia events. Furthermore, He designed his biggest work, the Mysterium, to last an entire week. Even more, Scriabin made plans not only for music, but also colored lights, incense, and dancing. He designed the performance to occur in the foothills of the Himalaya mountains. The Mysterium was never performed, and only sketches of the work remain. Modern Performances In modern times, we often experience performances of Scriabin’s most famous completed works accompanied by colored laser lights and incense. These are the Poem of Ecstasy (completed in 1908) and the Poem of Fire (completed in 1910). The lighting effects for these early performances were accomplished by the clavier à lumiéres. It was a keyboard instrument that projected colored light onto a screen.

It's a single movement classical piece for oboe and piano I wrote on the sonata form. But instead of the usual switching between tonal harmonies I switched between two different kind of harmonies, giving the piece a somewhat exotic taste. I used some glissando which one of the players said they were good as they were and the other (the one recording the piece) preferred to make them using the double-reeds.

These pieces were: ‘Rêverie’, ‘Ballade Slave’, ‘Tarentelle Styrienne’, ‘Valse Romantique’ and ‘Nocturne’. The actual publication of ‘Rêverie’ did not occur until April 1905 at which time, Debussy wrote to the publisher Fromont: “It was a mistake to bring out the ‘Rêverie’. Score: 3 pages, part: 1 pageO Come, All Ye Faithful O Come, All Ye Faithful is an English translation of the Latin Christmas carol Adeste Fideles. No one knows exactly who wrote it. One theory holds that King John IV of Portugal (1604–1656) wrote it. Another theory says John F. Wade or John Reading wrote it. Nowadays, we usually attribute it to John Wade. Seems like the oldest manuscript from 1751, is owned by Stonyhurst College in Lancashire. Lyrics The English translation O Come, All Ye Faithful was certainly written by Frederick Oakeley, a Catholic priest in 1841. This translation is probably the most common in the English speaking states. To begin with, the hymn had only four verses. Later, the verses grew to eight. Music directors often cut various verses because otherwise, the song goes too long. Some believe that St. Bonaventure wrote the first Latin lyrics. Others hold that King John IV of Portugal is responsible. Yet even others think the Cistercian monks wrote them. King John IV King John IV of Portugal was called The Musician King. He became king in 1640. In addition to performing the duties of a king, he was also a composer and music journalist. King John built a very large music library. Unfortunately, the library was ruined in 1755 because of the massive earthquake of Lisbon. In addition to building his library, the king started a Music School that produced many accomplished musicians. The king also worked diligently to get instrumental music approved by the Vatican for use in his churches. Aside from his authorship of Adeste Fideles, he is famous for another popular choral setting of the Crux Fidelis, a prevalent Lenten hymn. Performance in Context Verses are sometimes left out because all eight verses would take too long to perform. More to the point though, some of the verses may be unsuitable for whatever of the church calendar they are intended. The eighth verse deals with the Epiphany, so it makes sense to sing this on Epiphany Sunday, but not other Sundays. Duration: ca. 4' Song Without Words, “Twilight†is inspired by Felix Mendelssohn’s Songs Without Words, collections of lyrical piano pieces by the composer. There is nothing overly new, unusual or complicated in this piece. I chose, instead, to focus on lyricism, the main element that made me love Mendelssohn’s Songs Without Words so much. The subtitle, “Twilightâ€, came from my fascination with the time between sunset and evening. The piece is essentially divided into three sections; the first being a calm and warm melody, the second being more somber and melancholy, and the third being a triumphant return to the original calm and warm melody.
