Several versions were recorded by gospel choirs in the ‘20s and ‘30s, and Down by the Riverside, with its lyric, I ain’t goin’ to study war no more, was adopted as an anti-war song by the ‘60s counterculture.

For EliseA composition for Oboe and Piano written to mark the birth of the composers grand-daughter.The piece is a sweet piece of one movement lasting just under 3.30.it is a piece that students of the oboe will enjoy learning and playing. The standard for an oboist is around grade 5. The pianist needs to be competent and around grade 7 or upwards in standard. This is also a good piece for college students to work on together as a performance piece.This piece is reflective, and would serve well for a performance at a school concert, in a church, or as a meditative piece.The composition benefits from practice individually, with a coming together of players before the performance date and will give the performers the experience of practicing individually as well as together.Breath control is key for the oboist as after the introduction the oboe plays right through without break. The piece will challenge and teach the need for breath control to the performer whether they are seasoned or a student.The pianist will experiences wide stretches and may have to work out which notes can be lost due to the stretch involved and the notation of the chords without affecting the overall largesse of piano sound.Dynamics are also important and both players will need to work on getting this right as there are waves of dynamics in very spaces during the piece. Â Cogs & Gears evokes images of a well-oiled machine, driving. . .pushing. . .moving. The opening section locks measures of 3/4 and 6/8 together, working in tandem to propel the melody forward. The middle of the piece keeps the same pulse, but uses a jaunty melody to move first into 4 and then, with increasing frequency, measures of 2 and 3. The opening motif reappears before the piece once again pushes into the the lively second theme as it bounces towards its playful conclusion. Suitable for use as a recital, festival, or contest piece - as well as special music in church - this new piece is sure to be an audience and performer favorite!

Three uplifting solos for oboe with Piano accompanimentCompassion As the title suggests, this piece should be played with warmth the middle departure showing a little more anxiety before a return to the optimism of the opening theme. Apart from this, there is no formal structure. There should be a marked contrast between the flowing, lyrical passages of the opening section and the crisp staccato in the middle descending arpeggios.  Although the tempo indicates quickness, the feel should be one of animation rather than pace. The dynamic range is not great but should be accurately observed with clear contrasts. Mercy Much more of a duet for oboe and piano rather than a solo. This has a yearning, minor aspect with a contrasting few bars of a more comfortable major feel at the end of the middle section. The lively tempo should be driven through the whole piece with only a slight letup in the final two measures. Although written in waltz time, this is no dance being loaded with underlying energy and emotion. The dynamics remain fairly loud with only the expected variation in line with the phrasing.Tenderness This piece, written in the middle to high register, has a simple structure being a stable melody with variations and ornaments. Where the piano accompaniment has the theme it should be allowed to show through.  As the title suggests this should be played with a gentle lilt but not over-sentimental. Aim for a warm to mellow texture with comforting sounds. There is a general but slight crescendo throughout the piece.

For OBOE AND PIANO ACCOMPANIMENT (with optional Double Bass).This beautiful and exciting arrangement is from the beloved Rodgers & Hammerstein ground-breaking 1949Â Broadway musical, South Pacific. This arrangement begins very simply with the soloist unaccompanied. Then the piano comes in with a dream-like delicacy with expands into a rich and lush accompaniment. The bridge gets a little spicier with a jazz waltz feel and then expands back to a warmth before a final key change that turns into a big theatrical ending. This is sure to be a real crowd pleaser. The piano accompaniment is quite difficult but there are alternate passages included to simplify the most difficult passages. There is an optional BASS part included that would add to the performance. There is no drum part included, but a drummer could easily improvised from the Bass part which would add a lot as well. The song is a mournful ballad about a romantic relationship which is falling apart.The song also appeared the following year on Greatest Hits Volume II, though for copyright reasons it no longer appears on the current version of that album. It now appears on Greatest Hits 1976–1986, The Very Best of Elton John and in Greatest Hits 1970–2002, as well as a number of other compilations.The song was covered in 2002 by English boy band Blue for their second studio album, One Love (2002). The song was recorded as a collaboration with Elton John, and was the second single from the album. It peaked at number one on the UK Singles Chart on 15 December 2002 and also reached number one in Hungary and the Netherlands. It peaked within the top 10 in an additional 16 countries.In 2004, Elton John and Ray Charles performed the song on Charles' duet album, Genius Loves Company. It would turn out to be the last recording Charles ever did before his death that June. The duet was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. It was also performed by smooth jazz saxophonist Kenny G on the soprano saxophone featuring Richard Marx on his 2004 album At Last...The Duets Album later that year.The song was a Top 20 hit, reaching No. 11 in the United Kingdom, No. 6 in the United States and No. 3 in Canada. In addition, the song went to No. 1 on the US and Canadian Adult Contemporary charts. In the US, it was certified Gold on 25 January 1977 by the RIAA.The single was the lead single for the eight-track remix compilation Good Morning to the Night in collaboration with Australian remixer Pnau, which came out on 16 July 2012.
