Canon on Tongo for four guitars by Dan Jones

Canon on Tongo is a canon for four guitars at ten-bar intervals. At bar 61, guitar one returns to the beginning of the piece followed by the three others before a joint coda at bar 101. The da capo at bar 61 corresponds with the golden section of the piece.

The fingering is chosen to allow players to respect the full duration of the lines (where possible). The resonance created is also very important.

Originally intended as an inside joke for the LAGQ members, this clever and comical send-up of Pachelbel's beautiful (and somewhat overplayed) melody has become a standard LAGQ encore and an internet sensation. Featured in performance on the Mel Bay DVD LAGQ Live at the Sheldon, this unique arrangement presents the pristine Baroque theme, and then adapts it in a number of unexpected musical styles: Reggae, salsa, bluegrass, jazz, flamenco, disco, and even punk. This is the only arrangement in the LAGQ repertoire that was a true group-project with all four members (John Dearman, William Kanengiser, Scott Tennant and Andrew York) contributing; as a special bonus, new LAGQ member Matt Greif has added an alternative solo for the jazz section. Carefully notated to capture the nuances of LAGQ's stylistic flair, the parts are presented in standard notation as well as in tablature for those less familiar with note-reading. It's a challenging and fun re-imagining of a timeless classic.

The actual melody is much older and its origin unknown.The arrangement here is intended for an ensemble of guitars of mixed levels of experience. The verses and chorus are set in both G major, A major and then G major again. Groups can shorten or lengthen a performance if desired, according to experience.Arrangement details are as follows:Guitar 1 - has the main melody and also plays in harmony with Guitar 2. Higher-position playing is required later in the arrangement, if the the full version is performed.Guitar 2 - often harmonises, and plays in canon with Guitar 1. There is some high-position playing required in the full version.Guitar 3 - is intended for beginners and is an optional part. It consists of dotted half notes (minims) throughout.Guitar 4 - has chords throughout. I have provided chord symbols for those familiar with this system. The harmonies given in the notes and TAB are designed to facilitate left-hand chord changes.
