Published by Clive Lane (A0.1463458). ‘Lachrimæ or Seven Tears figured in Seven passionate pavans, with divers other pavans, galliards and allemands, set forth for the lute, viols, or violons, in five parts’ is a collection of instrumental music composed by John Dowland and published in 1604. Apart from the sheer quality of the music, it is notable as the first publication of English music scored specifically for strings and for lute, and the first to have used the table layout for consort music.There are seven Lachrimae pavans, which are variations on the theme that Dowland had already made famous as a lute solo and a song (“Flow my tears”).The “divers other” compositions are: two almans (“almands”), nine lively galliards (“galiards”), two sombre pavans, and a “funerall.” There are 21 pieces in all and I have divided them into three books, retaining the original ordering of the pieces. This is Book One - the “Lachrimae” pavans:1. Lachrimae antiquae2. Lachrimae antiquae novae3. Lachrimae gementes4. Lachrimae tristes5. Lachrimae coactae6. Lachrimae amantis7. PATAPAN - traditional carol - 4 GUITARS/LARGE ENSEMBLE For Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.There are TWO ARRANGEMENTS in this one edition.Derek Hasted writes This Burgundian Carol, first published in 1720, usually has four verses in the French version and three in the English. This arrangement has three verses, all in slightly different styles.The melody and the onomatopoeia in the lyrics are together meant to symbolise the fife (“Ture-lure-luâ€) and the drum (“Pata-pata-panâ€).In both arrangements Guitar One has melody, and it fits nicely in a mix of IV and V position. There is no fingering, because your ensemble might want to choose between two different approaches...A less experienced ensemble might prefer to venture up the neck just to reach for the A and B notes, and return to the first position as soon as possible...A more experienced group might want to stay up the neck to get a more rounded tone throughout. Depending on your choice of fingering, slurs might be possible to improve the flow.There are two versions of the lower parts. In the first arrangement, in “SATB†style, Guitar 4 plays the bass; Guitar 3 provides, in the three verses, percussion, a choral countermelody, and finally a Hurdy-Gurdy style drone; Guitar provides a countermelody.In the second arrangement, the roles rotate at the end of each verse, so that all the accompanying players have three very different verses to play. Guitar 1 stays with the tune, because in a mixed ability ensemble, moving the tune about tends to highlight any weaknesses. My quartet has parts that increase slightly in complexity from bass to tune, so thereâ??s something for everyone here. The bass line is supplied in both treble and bass clefs, and the two parts are identical, so for a large ensemble, you can have one or the other or both in your performance.Everything is comfortable to play, and my transcription is based on the gentle simplicity found in Cyndi Lauperâ??s official video, and placed in a key that suits the wide range of pitch in this piece.The music rises and falls as the song progresses, making the dynamics happen almost automatically. Published by Clive Lane (A0.1463461). ‘Lachrimæ or Seven Tears figured in Seven passionate pavans, with divers other pavans, galliards and allemands, set forth for the lute, viols, or violons, in five parts’ is a collection of instrumental music composed by John Dowland and published in 1604. Apart from the sheer quality of the music, it is notable as the first publication of English music scored specifically for strings and for lute, and the first to have used the table layout for consort music.There are seven Lachrimae pavans, which are variations on the theme that Dowland had already made famous as a lute solo and a song (“Flow my tears”).The “divers other” compositions are: two almans (“almands”), nine lively galliards (“galiards”), two sombre pavans, and a “funerall.” There are 21 pieces in all and I have divided them into three books, retaining the original ordering of the pieces.This is Book Three - five galliards and two almans:15. FANTASIA UPON A CABBAGE - GUITAR QUARTET/large ensembleFor Classical or Acoustic GuitarPerfect for School Music Teachers and for adults with a sense of the ridiculous...Derek Hasted writes This really does need a bit of explanation. Well, more than a bit...As a Guitar Teacher I often have to teach beginners how to read music, and of course the seven names of the musical notes can be made to spell words. Like CABBAGE.This, then, is a little piece of kitchen-based nonsense, cooking up a rather unappetising dish comprising cabbage, egg, beef and a lot, lot more cabbage. Iâ??ve arranged it (if that is the word) to include nods to the renaissance and baroque periods.The scores contain mark-ups to show where a particular player has an item of food in their motif.As well as EGG, youâ??ll find some GEG (thatâ??s scrambled egg) and a BAD EGG (and some sad music). Youâ??ll also find that the recipe includes a helping or two of BEEF.Bach comes in for a special mention, as thereâ??s a fugue-like section where the subject comes in a fifth away from the starting key (which Iâ??ve loosely interpreted as being a recipe in a foreign language) and thereâ??s some stretti (well, just about) at the end, when the fugue subjects overlap a tiny, tiny amount. And we also pay homage to the pedal section of an organ, where the CABBAGE subject comes in down low at half the speed of the original.The final, jazzy, chord at the end contains seven notes that collectively spell CABBAGE.Guitar 4 is supplied in treble and bass clefs - either or both will work in a large ensemble.So there are lots of teaching points, lots of things to ask the audience to listen out for, and a lot of mischief in a compact piece.The musical refrain CABBAGE is not the greatest motif to work with, but on reflection, when you have this much cabbage, itâ??s much better to listen to it than have to eat it...I hope you enjoy playing this piece!This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts. Itâ??s ideal for a school concert but would also suit an adult ensemble with modest experience.Set in swing time, thereâ??s just one little piece of percussion where there are three sharp raps to the front of the guitar - take this on the wing of the bridge and thereâ??s no change of marking the soft wood of the front.School Teachers - you could consider splitting Guitar 3 into two single melodic lines - some players playing stems up and some playing stems down, and then this piece will suit players from almost complete beginners upwards.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!
