Here is a description of the work IN MEMORIAM by composer Brian Pappal. In Memoriam: A Chorale After Bruckner was composed in memory of Murray Crewe, former Bass Trombonist with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Murray was my private trombone teacher at Duquesne University where he maintained a large studio of private trombone students and directed the trombone choir. During my lessons with him and in trombone choir rehearsals, Murray was contagiously positive and encouraging with a sense of humor all his own. He was also an artist of immense depth and sensitivity who daily sought to create and encounter moments of beauty in the world. Some of my greatest musical memories of Murray are of his leading the trombone choir in playing transcriptions of Brucknerâ??s choral motets. There are obvious parallels between the voice and the trombone, and Murrayâ??s artistry combined with Brucknerâ??s profound compositions created a deeply moving experience for me as a young musician. I wrote this piece with those memories in my mind. The sonorities are intentionally vocal, and performance of the piece should be approached in a similarly sustained and expressive style. The first trombone part remains rather high without rest; it may be played by either a tenor or alto trombone depending on player preference.

This easy arrangement for trombone trio was adapted to be simple to perform and understand the structure of the original work for various levels of musical knowledge. It can be played freely by beginning students due to the ease imposed on the piece; however, this does not preclude it from being played by professionals and music teachers. It is also ideal for academic recitals, weddings, student method and ceremonies that are arranged in the same way as the piece contains. The Cantata 156 (BWV 156) was written for the third Sunday after Epiphany in 1729, and was first performed on January 23 of that year. The text is by Picander, one of Bach's favorite librettists. of the four cantatas written by Bach for the feast, it was the last and only one scored for solo voice. This is a choral cantata, employing a choral melody in several movements. Cantata 156, in fact, employs two different choral melodies and texts in the second and sixth movements. A cantata is a sung symphony consisting of several parts, one of which is the Arioso, which is the initial instrumental part.

This Trombone Trio arrangement was created to preserve the characteristics of the original work, inspiring and significant to Beethoven’s well-known choral symphony. It is suitable for young music students and professional musicians, for recitals, repertoire, academic presentations, and didactic material. The transcription is faithful to the structure, with only one key change, maintaining the essence of the striking melody. Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony Op. 125 incorporates part of the poem An die Freude (“To Joyâ€), a hymn written by Friedrich Schiller, with the text sung by soloists and a choir in its last movement. It was the first example of a major composer using the human voice as prominently as instruments in a symphony, creating a far-reaching work that set the tone for the symphonic form adopted by Romantic composers. This is Ludwig van Beethoven’s last complete symphony. The choral symphony, better known as the Ninth Symphony or The Ninth, is one of the best-known works in the Western repertoire, considered an icon and predecessor of Romantic music and one of Beethoven’s great masterpieces. A new set of 3 beautiful sounding Corelli Trio Sonatas for Trombone Trio transcribed by L.A. Philharmonic Principal Trombonist, Ralph Sauer. Opus 1, No. 2 in D major, Opus 1, No. 3 in G major, Opus 4, No. 1 in C major. Each trio of about 8 minutes in length is in a 4 movement structure of Slow- Fast-Slow-Fast. There are many great pure chorale harmonies, plus each 2nd movement has a contrapuntal style to it, which is great for building up keen ears and ensemble sense. These sonatas are of moderately advanced difficulty, in tenor and bass clefs. Endurance is not a problem because of the masterly editing of Mr. Sauer, who is legendary for his transcription skills. These trios can be performed by most College/University students and some keen high schoolers. Range goes from a pedal A for Bass Trombone to one high D for the 1st part, but most of the tessitura is in a normal range.

This easy arrangement for trombone trio has been adapted to be simple to perform and understand the structure of the original work for various levels of musical knowledge. It can be played freely by beginning students because of the ease imposed on the piece. It is often performed at wedding ceremonies slowly and reverently, challenging the effect suggested by Bach in his original score for voices with trumpet, oboes, strings, and continuous bass. This is one of Bach's most beautiful cantatas, made famous by the Jesus the Joy of Men chorus. It was originally composed for Advent 1716 in Weimar. Years later, already in Leipzig, Advent was tempus clausum, there was no music in the churches. Bach then reworked it for the Feast of Mary's Visitation. It is the final chorale of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. Although it is the 32nd cantata composed by Bach, of those that have survived, it was given BWV 147 in the complete catalog of his works.

The two sections are all in bass clef, plus technique, range and endurance are kept to a moderate level.Prelude is a beautiful lyrical chorale marked religioso that weaves its way through various tonal centers, but returns home to C major. Fughetta as it sounds is contrapuntal in nature flipping itself around after first being stated by each performer.Altogether the work is a delightful addition to the repertoire for lesser experienced players.

With lyrics by Valentin Thilo, O Jesulein süss is a sacred melody adapted and catalogued as BWV 493. The first translation is by Dirk van Hogendorp, who made it more of a song for the time of suffering.
