Mozart ((1756 – 1791)) Saxophone Trio, flexible instrumentation Divertimento in B Flat K.439b by Mozart, arranged for sax trio, flexible instrumentation. This is number two of a set of five divertimentos written around 1783. Originally, the works were written for 3 basset horns but were also performed by other wind and string ensembles. They are commonly performed by two clarinets and a bassoon today. This arrangement is for saxophone trio with flexible scoring.Divertimento in B Flat has five movements: Allegro (Common time, tempo around 124 bpm, B-flat major throughout, about 2.25 minutes) Minuetto 1 (3/4 time, tempo around 124-136 bpm, ABA form, B-flat major to E-flat major to B-flat, about 3.75 minutes) Larghetto (3/4 time, tempo around 60 bpm, B flat major throughout, about 4 minutes) Minuetto 2 (3/4 time, tempo around 136 – 144 bpm, ABA form, B-flat major to F to B-flat major, about 3.5 minutes) Rondo (2/4 time, tempo around 144 – 152 bpm, ABACA form, B-flat major except when the C section wanders to F minor, about 3.25 minutes) The first movement features a lively main theme and a carefree, somewhat mellow alternate theme. Minuet 1 has a graceful main theme and relaxed, somewhat playful trio section. The movement three Larghetto is slow and dreamy. It even seems to yawn when the music several times indulges in long pauses. The second Minuet movement is livelier and a bit more colorful and playful than the first with a lively trio section. The concluding Rondo (Allegro) is energetic and colorful, with syncopations and interesting key shifts to add interest.This version of Divertimento in B-flat includes the following parts: Full trio score (C score), 20pp Part 1 – soprano saxophone, 8pp Part 2 – soprano saxophone 2, 8pp Part 2 – alto saxophone, 8pp Part 3 – tenor saxophone, 8pp Part 3 – baritone saxophone, 8pp The printed score and parts are 9″x 12″. The alternate parts included with this arrangement allow a great deal of flexibility in your ensemble. The parts can be played in any combination as long as part one, two, and three are covered. Probably Soprano-Alto-Tenor or Soprano-Alto-Baritone would be the most common grouping. However, even though it is not specified on the parts, there is no reason the piece could not be played by a Tenor/Tenor/Baritone ensemble. Also if a bass sax is available it could certainly cover the part 3 tenor sax part.

Composed in 1717, these six trio sonatas for the organ are among Bach's earliest works for the instrument. They are all in the traditional three-movement form and are composed in the style of the Italian concerto grosso, with two upper voices (treble and alto) and a basso continuo. The two upper voices often intertwine in intricate contrapuntal melodies, while the basso continuo provides harmonic support. The works are also full of virtuosic passages that demonstrate Bach's mastery of the organ. The Trio Sonatas are considered to be among the most important and influential works of the Baroque era, and they continue to be widely performed and studied today.The Bach Trio Sonatas have been successfully transcribed for a variety of ensembles, including wind, string, and brass ensembles. The parts are easily divided among a variety of wind instruments, including flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and saxophone. In these transcriptions, the original material is retained, but often with some additional orchestration or embellishment. These transcriptions often emphasize the polyphonic texture of the original works, creating a rich soundscape.  The Sonatas have also been successfully adapted for a variety of string ensembles. In these versions, the original two-part texture with the basso is maintained, creating a full and satisfying sound that allows for a more nuanced interpretation of the works. In addition, these transcriptions often add a variety of dynamic markings and articulations that were not present in the original editions. These transcriptions provide performers with a variety of options for interpreting and performing these beloved works.

The Six Trio Sonatas, BWV 525-530 were composed about 1727 during Bach’s period in Leipzig. They were not composed for organ, but (according to Forkel, Bach’s first biographer whose information came from Bach’s son Carl Philip Emmanuel Bach) for the pedal harpsichord as means of improiving the pedal technique of his son Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. This instrument, which requires a great deal of precision in performance, contains a normal harpsichord with two manuals attached to a pedal board which activates another harpsichord which is lower to the ground. Many of the movements in these Italian sonatas were used in other settings, in Bach’s Cantatas and in other instrumental works.Bach always tuned his own keyboards and confided his tuning system to his student Johann Kimberger (1721-1788) who used this information to devise several tuning schemes to create a well-tempered system according to Bach’s ideas. The main principal that Bach gave Kimberger was that all thirds should be tuned slightly sharp (...alle grossen Terzen scharf). The saxophone is an ideal instrument to experiment with this sort of tuning, given the possibilities for adjustment in the embouchure. This transcription is for saxophone trio: soprano, alto, and either tenor or baritone saxophones (parts are included for both). It is a straightforward example of Classical sonata-allegro form. This arrangement is in the original key of B-flat major. It is in common time (4/4) throughout. The tempo stays at 'allegro' throughout. Intermediate-advanced players should have no problems with this work.
