Bl_music #6644623. Published by bl_music (A0.842573). Narcisse Bousquet (ca. 1800 – 1869) was a French composer, flageolet player and the conductor of the Elysée-Monmartre orchestra. He appears to have been active in both England and France in the first half of the Century. The dates given are the conventional ones, though there is a lack of evidence to support them. In about 1855, Bousquet worked with Jules Prudence Rivière at the Casino Paganini. There is a reference to him working in Paris at the Bal Barthélémy between about 1860 and 1865. One book Le Polycorde ou Nouveau Traite Théorique et Pratique de Musique, published in 1872 by J. Frédéric Giraud, describes a six-key French flageolet as the Systéme Bousquet so he may have been involved in the development of this type of instrument. Beyond this, very little is known about Bousquet and he does not appear in any of the usual sources for information about 19th Century French musicians. Solo part in bass clef suitable for euphonium or ophicleide.

Le Rossignol or the Nightingale is originally a vocalise for Soprano solo from Saint-Saën's incidental orchestral music for the play, Parysatis written in 1902. This 4 minute work is all about mood. For this arrangement, Mr. Sauer transposes into the key of C, which lays perfectly for all of the bird-like calls that are in phrases which are slurred. The music has a lot of ad lib. tempo sections which gives the performer plenty of time to create that magic call of the Nightingale. Early writers thought it was the female that sang, but in fact it is the male. The Nightingale usually sings at night or just before dawn when other birds are silent and has a strong spontaneous song with an impressive range of trills and whistles.

Fandango are taken from the 12 danzas españolas, volume I from 1890, for Piano.Mr. Sauer has brilliantly taken the solo Piano part and divided it between solo Euphnium and Piano. Euphonium performers will enjoy working on this style of Spanish Nationalist music of which there is none in the solo repertoire. The Two Dances (in tenor clef) are about 6 1/2 minutes in length and can be performed by advanced musicians.

The Intermezzo is lyrical, sensual and Eastern sounding. The Tarantella is a sprightly folk dance of southern Italy. The curious name comes from the wolf spider or Tarantula whose bite is highly poisonous and in earlier times was believed to cause the victims to engage in a frenzied dance. The text of the songs is taken from poems set by Friedrich Rückert, a professor of Oriental languages. Mahler's music, able to convey complex emotions with seemingly simple melodic lines is the perfect vehicle for these poems. Ralph Sauer has taken four of these songs and edited them for performance on the Euphonium. He has also included the original German and English translations of the songs to aid the performers and also the listener to best enjoy the feelings coming from this sublime music. All together the songs are about 15 minutes in length. Although technically not difficult, these songs require a mature interpretation in order to best convey their message.
