There are three movements in Fantasy Pieces that make up Robert Schumann?s Opus 73. Completed in 1849, he linked each piece harmonically. Schumann directs the performers to follow on to the next section, indicating that these movements were intended as a whole.

He was also a very talented painter in the style of Goya. The Two Dances, 1. Oriental and 2. Fandango are taken from the 12 danzas españolas, volume I from 1890, for Piano.Mr. Sauer has brilliantly taken the solo Piano part and divided it between solo Euphnium and Piano. Euphonium performers will enjoy working on this style of Spanish Nationalist music of which there is none in the solo repertoire. The Two Dances (in tenor clef) are about 6 1/2 minutes in length and can be performed by advanced musicians.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.811056). The Prokofiev Five Songs Without Words, Opus 35 were written in December 1920 during a tour of the USA. The musical format of songs without words is not unusual, as Mendelssohn composed a number of very beautiful ones for the Piano and of course Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise is one of the most famous works in the musical repertoire. The Five Songs Without Words were premiered in New York City in 1921 by the soprano Nina Koshetz. In 1925, while living in Paris the composer arranged the five brief songs for Violin and Piano. Their haunting, bittersweet and lyrical style is typical of Prokofiev and the advanced performer will find these wonderful miniatures totaling 12 minutes in length a perfect vehicle for a major work on a recital. Mr. Sauer has scored these songs beautifully for the Euphonium and Piano.

Then, beginning at age 16, Lalo studied at the Paris Conservatoire under Berlioz's old enemy François Antoine Habeneck. For several years, he worked as a string player and teacher in Paris. In 1848, he joined with friends to found the Armingaud Quartet, playing viola and second violin. Lalo's earliest surviving compositions are songs and chamber works. He dedicated most of his career to the composition of chamber music, which was in vogue, and to writing works for orchestra. These two works beautifully arranged by Mr. Sauder show the core of Lalo's chamber music; personal, subtle at times and filled with a French lyricism. For advanced performers.

'Romance' may have been written as a slow movement to a Violin Concerto that was never completed. Alexander Borodin was actually trained as a chemist and physician and spent a good deal of his time promoting womens’ issues, much to the consternation of his fellow composers who wound up finishing up much of his work after his sudden death at the age of 53. The opera Prince Igor is possibly his greatest and boldest work with many beautiful melodies coming forth, especially the Chorus and Dance of the Polovetsain Maidens from Act II. The music has an mysterious Eastern sound which is very captivating.There is nothing like this written for the Euphonium and Mr. Sauer’s arrangement is wonderful.This work is about 7 minutes in length for advanced performers.
