Album Leaves are minor compositions, often for Piano that composers originally used to dedicate to friends or admirers to be inserted into music albums or autograph books, not necessarily intended for publication. They tend to be short and not too demanding technically. Ralph Sauer has arranged Wagner's two Leaves for Euphonum and Piano in bass clef. Number 1 is a piano work from 1875 dedicated to Frau Betty Schott the wife of music publisher Franz Schott. Number 2, also a piano work, is an early opus from 1840 and is dedicated to the Paris based German painter Ernst Benedikt Kietz, a big fan of Wagner, who helped support the young composer during his lean years in Paris. Both leaves are lyrical, giving the performer a true taste of the master.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792533). Paul Marie Théodore Vincent d'Indy was born in Paris into an aristocratic family of royalist and Catholic persuasion. He had piano lessons from an early age from his paternal grandmother, who passed him on to Antoine François Marmontel and Louis Diémer. His main influence was Cesar Franck. These three pieces were some of his many works for Piano.Opus 33 was inspired by a trip to Bayreuth, the musical home of Wagner and the Black Forest region. Opus 33 no. 1 from 1889 is titled ? with no explanation of itself. Opus 33 no. 10 is titled Lermoos, which is a delightful skiing village in Austria right on the border with Germany. Germany's largest mountain is in perfect view, possibly giving the movement its spirit. Opus 28 is a Serenade for Violin and Piano published in 1900. It is lithe, subtle and lyrical.

As the title suggests the work dying and dancing for Euphonium solo and Piano accompaniment is in two parts, which are played without a pause between the two. The first part, an adagio, is not necessarily meant to be evocative of the actual act of passing away, but more perhaps of the contemplation and reflection upon one’s life as that time approaches, and particularly of sorrow over regret and disappointment. The unsettled mood of the music reflects this bitterness, and stands in contrast to the expansive peace of the grave, heard at the beginning and end of the adagio. Dance, with ironic wit, the second part, is the other side of the same coin; perhaps humor of the gallows describes its spirit. Sérénade is an early work of Rachmaninoff, from a grouping of five short solo Piano pieces titled Morceau de Fantasie written in 1892 and dedicated to his harmony teacher Anton Arensky. One of his most famous works, the Prélude in C-sharp minor is from this same Opus 3. Opus 3, No. 5 in B-flat minor is the final work of the set and is in a gentle Waltz style, sometimes venturing into the Dorian mode.Rachmaninoff's lush harmonies and gorgeous melody work very well for the Euphonium with this fine arrangement by Ralph Sauer.For advanced performers, this movement is about 5 minutes in length.A perfect companion to the Rachmaninoff - Fantasy Piece, Op. 3, No. 3, also available from Cherry Classics. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792382). Lalo was born in Lille (Nord), in northernmost France. He attended that city's music conservatory in his youth. Then, beginning at age 16, Lalo studied at the Paris Conservatoire under Berlioz's old enemy François Antoine Habeneck. For several years, he worked as a string player and teacher in Paris. In 1848, he joined with friends to found the Armingaud Quartet, playing viola and second violin. Lalo's earliest surviving compositions are songs and chamber works. He dedicated most of his career to the composition of chamber music, which was in vogue, and to writing works for orchestra. These two works beautifully arranged by Mr. Sauder show the core of Lalo's chamber music; personal, subtle at times and filled with a French lyricism. For advanced performers.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.811242). Originally titled Sospiri d'Amour, this instrumental miniature, Sospiri (Sighs), Opus 70 was originally intended as a companion to Salut d'Amour. Elgar composed this heartfelt work in 1914 for string orchestra, harp, and organ, just before the outbreak of WWI. It is a bleak adagio of thoughtful intensity that he dedicated as a tribute to W.H. Reed, a dear friend, and the Concertmaster of the London Symphony. The work has been described most beautifully by Michael Kennedy who wrote, It is, though short, a major work of grave beauty, an epitome of Elgar’s ability to express nostalgic regret.Ralph Sauer has arranged this beautiful work for Euphonium and Piano (part is in bass clef) as an homage to the great English master. The work is about 5 minutes in length and appropriate for advanced performers.

There are three movements in Fantasy Pieces that make up Robert Schumann?s Opus 73. Completed in 1849, he linked each piece harmonically. Schumann directs the performers to follow on to the next section, indicating that these movements were intended as a whole.
From a mood of delicate expression, through eloquent and lively to fiery and urgent, this is a compelling and intriguing work. The Fantasy Pieces are full of Romanticism and thoughtfulness to make it an important and entertaining work.
This version has been skillfully arranged for Euphonium and Piano by Ralph Sauer, formerly Principal Trombonist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
