There are three movements in Fantasy Pieces that make up Robert Schumann?s Opus 73. Completed in 1849, he linked each piece harmonically. Schumann directs the performers to follow on to the next section, indicating that these movements were intended as a whole.
From a mood of delicate expression, through eloquent and lively to fiery and urgent, this is a compelling and intriguing work. The Fantasy Pieces are full of Romanticism and thoughtfulness to make it an important and entertaining work.
This version has been skillfully arranged for Euphonium and Piano by Ralph Sauer, formerly Principal Trombonist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.811241). The Variations on a Theme by Haydn, Op. 56, one of Brahms' greatest creations was written and premiered in 1873. It consists of a theme and eight variations, plus a grand finale. It was written in two forms, one for two pianos and the more well-known orchestral version.There is a musicological controversy as to whether the theme is actually from the pen of Haydn or another mystery composer. Some are now referring to it as the Saint Anthony Variations. Nevertheless, this 18-minute work by Brahms is a magnificent work of genius.Not to be outdone, Mr. Sauer has created his own masterpiece of this work, arranged for virtuoso artists of the Euphonium (solo part is in bass clef) and Piano. It will surely become a classic in the repertoire.

Album Leaves are minor compositions, often for Piano that composers originally used to dedicate to friends or admirers to be inserted into music albums or autograph books, not necessarily intended for publication. They tend to be short and not too demanding technically. Ralph Sauer has arranged Wagner's two Leaves for Euphonum and Piano in bass clef. Number 1 is a piano work from 1875 dedicated to Frau Betty Schott the wife of music publisher Franz Schott. Number 2, also a piano work, is an early opus from 1840 and is dedicated to the Paris based German painter Ernst Benedikt Kietz, a big fan of Wagner, who helped support the young composer during his lean years in Paris. Both leaves are lyrical, giving the performer a true taste of the master.

However this one song is the only one not for solo Piano, but for Cello & Piano and was published posthumously. The work is in A-B-A form, the B section being moody in contrast to the heavenly outer sections. The sublime lyricism of the work gives it its great strength. Mr. Sauer has once again found the perfect key for his Euphonium and Piano transcription. For advanced performers.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.811056). The Prokofiev Five Songs Without Words, Opus 35 were written in December 1920 during a tour of the USA. The musical format of songs without words is not unusual, as Mendelssohn composed a number of very beautiful ones for the Piano and of course Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise is one of the most famous works in the musical repertoire. The Five Songs Without Words were premiered in New York City in 1921 by the soprano Nina Koshetz. In 1925, while living in Paris the composer arranged the five brief songs for Violin and Piano. Their haunting, bittersweet and lyrical style is typical of Prokofiev and the advanced performer will find these wonderful miniatures totaling 12 minutes in length a perfect vehicle for a major work on a recital. Mr. Sauer has scored these songs beautifully for the Euphonium and Piano.

He was also a very talented painter in the style of Goya. The Two Dances, 1. Oriental and 2. Fandango are taken from the 12 danzas españolas, volume I from 1890, for Piano.Mr. Sauer has brilliantly taken the solo Piano part and divided it between solo Euphnium and Piano. Euphonium performers will enjoy working on this style of Spanish Nationalist music of which there is none in the solo repertoire. The Two Dances (in tenor clef) are about 6 1/2 minutes in length and can be performed by advanced musicians.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792533). Paul Marie Théodore Vincent d'Indy was born in Paris into an aristocratic family of royalist and Catholic persuasion. He had piano lessons from an early age from his paternal grandmother, who passed him on to Antoine François Marmontel and Louis Diémer. His main influence was Cesar Franck. These three pieces were some of his many works for Piano.Opus 33 was inspired by a trip to Bayreuth, the musical home of Wagner and the Black Forest region. Opus 33 no. 1 from 1889 is titled ? with no explanation of itself. Opus 33 no. 10 is titled Lermoos, which is a delightful skiing village in Austria right on the border with Germany. Germany's largest mountain is in perfect view, possibly giving the movement its spirit. Opus 28 is a Serenade for Violin and Piano published in 1900. It is lithe, subtle and lyrical.

The writing is very expressive and dark, possibly evoking the mood of Europe in the throes of great upheavals and the Great War. This item is now available with parts in bass and treble clef. George Gershwin’s Three Preludes, originally published for Piano in 1926, have been transcribed by Ralph Sauer in this first ever edition for Euphonium & Piano. About 6 minutes in length, the Preludes are jazzy, bluesy and a lot of fun to play, plus, very entertaining for audiences. This transcription, in bass clef is suitable for advanced performers with a range from a low C# to high D's. Prelude No. 1 has a bluesy motif with a strong jazz feel. Prelude No. 2, Blue Melody, is a sad song also with a blues feel using lots of sevenths and a major/minor duality. Prelude No. 3, Spanish Prelude features lots of syncopations and a battle between major & minor with the major winning out in the end. This work will make a fantastic addition to your recital.
