Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.811241). The Variations on a Theme by Haydn, Op. 56, one of Brahms' greatest creations was written and premiered in 1873. It consists of a theme and eight variations, plus a grand finale. It was written in two forms, one for two pianos and the more well-known orchestral version.There is a musicological controversy as to whether the theme is actually from the pen of Haydn or another mystery composer. Some are now referring to it as the Saint Anthony Variations. Nevertheless, this 18-minute work by Brahms is a magnificent work of genius.Not to be outdone, Mr. Sauer has created his own masterpiece of this work, arranged for virtuoso artists of the Euphonium (solo part is in bass clef) and Piano. It will surely become a classic in the repertoire.

George Gershwin’s Three Preludes, originally published for Piano in 1926, have been transcribed by Ralph Sauer in this first ever edition for Euphonium & Piano. About 6 minutes in length, the Preludes are jazzy, bluesy and a lot of fun to play, plus, very entertaining for audiences. This transcription, in bass clef is suitable for advanced performers with a range from a low C# to high D's. Prelude No. 1 has a bluesy motif with a strong jazz feel. Prelude No. 2, Blue Melody, is a sad song also with a blues feel using lots of sevenths and a major/minor duality. Prelude No. 3, Spanish Prelude features lots of syncopations and a battle between major & minor with the major winning out in the end. This work will make a fantastic addition to your recital.

The F-major Romance is a tender, adagio cantabile movement full of beauty, requiring grace, poise and elegance to perform properly. It has been said that it could have been titled Song Without Words, the music being so lyrical of character. 'Romance' may have been written as a slow movement to a Violin Concerto that was never completed. This arrangement by Gordon Cherry is a wonderful addition to the Euphonium repertoire.Almost 10 minutes in length, this work for advanced performers will be a great addition to any recital.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.811056). The Prokofiev Five Songs Without Words, Opus 35 were written in December 1920 during a tour of the USA. The musical format of songs without words is not unusual, as Mendelssohn composed a number of very beautiful ones for the Piano and of course Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise is one of the most famous works in the musical repertoire. The Five Songs Without Words were premiered in New York City in 1921 by the soprano Nina Koshetz. In 1925, while living in Paris the composer arranged the five brief songs for Violin and Piano. Their haunting, bittersweet and lyrical style is typical of Prokofiev and the advanced performer will find these wonderful miniatures totaling 12 minutes in length a perfect vehicle for a major work on a recital. Mr. Sauer has scored these songs beautifully for the Euphonium and Piano.

Elgar composed this heartfelt work in 1914 for string orchestra, harp, and organ, just before the outbreak of WWI. It is a bleak adagio of thoughtful intensity that he dedicated as a tribute to W.H. Reed, a dear friend, and the Concertmaster of the London Symphony. Bl_music #6644623. Published by bl_music (A0.842573). Narcisse Bousquet (ca. 1800 – 1869) was a French composer, flageolet player and the conductor of the Elysée-Monmartre orchestra. He appears to have been active in both England and France in the first half of the Century. The dates given are the conventional ones, though there is a lack of evidence to support them. In about 1855, Bousquet worked with Jules Prudence Rivière at the Casino Paganini. There is a reference to him working in Paris at the Bal Barthélémy between about 1860 and 1865. One book Le Polycorde ou Nouveau Traite Théorique et Pratique de Musique, published in 1872 by J. Frédéric Giraud, describes a six-key French flageolet as the Systéme Bousquet so he may have been involved in the development of this type of instrument. Beyond this, very little is known about Bousquet and he does not appear in any of the usual sources for information about 19th Century French musicians. Solo part in bass clef suitable for euphonium or ophicleide.

Le Rossignol or the Nightingale is originally a vocalise for Soprano solo from Saint-Saën's incidental orchestral music for the play, Parysatis written in 1902. This 4 minute work is all about mood. For this arrangement, Mr. Sauer transposes into the key of C, which lays perfectly for all of the bird-like calls that are in phrases which are slurred. The music has a lot of ad lib. tempo sections which gives the performer plenty of time to create that magic call of the Nightingale. Early writers thought it was the female that sang, but in fact it is the male. The Nightingale usually sings at night or just before dawn when other birds are silent and has a strong spontaneous song with an impressive range of trills and whistles.

These three pieces were some of his many works for Piano.Opus 33 was inspired by a trip to Bayreuth, the musical home of Wagner and the Black Forest region. Opus 33 no. 1 from 1889 is titled ? with no explanation of itself. Opus 33 no. 10 is titled Lermoos, which is a delightful skiing village in Austria right on the border with Germany. Germany's largest mountain is in perfect view, possibly giving the movement its spirit. Opus 28 is a Serenade for Violin and Piano published in 1900. It is lithe, subtle and lyrical.
