This challenging arrangement is the perfect addition to a college trombone recital or presentation piece. Lively, entertaining, engaging and full of beautiful counterpoint, Dvorak Front and Center is bound to be an audience pleaser from note one! Logically placed generous rehearsal markings are carefully set and a score is included to facilitate efficient preparation and rehearsal. There is an opportunity for an alto trombone double in the first part (not transposed). The first part does explore the very high register (triple D) but ossia notes are always included as an option. All parts are called upon for melodic playing as the lead line does move around. Thus, the 2nd and 3rd parts are called upon for a little high register playing too (not as high as the first though). Be advised- this is a challenging and very rewarding arrangement for advanced players. With the proper investment of time, Dvorak Front and Center will return rewards and accolades for your studious trombone quartet.

Gordon Cherry #4821599. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792418). Mr. Andrew Converse has written a great arrangement for Trombone Quartet of Sousa's first big hit as a march. The Gladiator is an early work by John Philip Sousa, written in 1886 while he was leader of the US Marine Band. The Gladiator was written as a tribute to Charles B. Towle, a journalist at the Boston Traveler. The journalist introduced him to the Knights Templar. There is speculation about the origins of the march's name. Sousa had not written many marches before that, and none of them received great popularity. The Gladiator, however, sold over a million copies - a record for the time and it was soon performed frequently. It follows the traditional march style of the period. Although marches such as Semper Fidelis, The Washington Post, Stars and Stripes Forever and Hands Across the Sea have achieved greater popularity, the Gladiator is still regarded as John Philip Sousa's first success.

The lyrics are in the original German and the movement is in the key of F (original). The Suite is of moderately advanced difficulty, in tenor and bass clefs. Endurance is not a problem. The highest note is a single high C in the 1st Trombone part. The other movements are delightful in beautiful choral style and will add depth to any recital or concert.

It is now available in a newly arranged edition for Four Trombones and Piano, by Gordon Cherry. Written during Schumann's most prolific period in 1849, it is a marvelous showpiece for Trombone quartet & Piano and unsurpassed for its sheer excitement. Each performer needs to be at the top of their game, but the rewards are well worth the effort. The 3-movement work of almost 20 minutes in length is a joy to perform and to listen to. Recommended for advanced performers.

The music is the same as the original song, though Chadwick's lyrics albeit unique and original are clearly derived and inspired, and in parts a loose translation. The song’s subject is the birth of Jesus Christ narrated in the Gospel of Luke, specifically the scene in which shepherds outside Bethlehem encounter a multitude of angels singing and praising the newborn child. Here is a description by composer Henry Wolking of his beautifully expressive new work for trombone quartet, Another Today.Another Today for trombone quartet was composed in the spring of 2020. This will most certainly join a long list of other compositions written by homebound composers during the beginning of the worldwide pandemic. Another Today is a seven and a half minute single movement concert work with several contrasting sections. Though hard to categorize, it is lively, energetic, and highly expressive. I rate it at the medium-difficult level of difficulty. The ranges are moderate but are highly rhythmic. I feel it is one of the most expressive chamber brass works of my career.

The song was eventually published along with the Happy Birthday lyrics as an optional second verse. This arrangement works very well in concert, having been successfully used many times.
