Psalm 1 by Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672), is taken from his collection of choral settings of several of the biblical Psalms of David, in which Schütz continued the polychoral tradition he had absorbed in Venice as a student of Giovanni Gabrieli. Schütz indicated in his preface to the Psalms, published in 1619, that due to limits on performance during the Thirty Years War, alternate instruments or voices could be employed as available. As Psalm 1 was composed for two choirs of voices, it might be an attractive option to double the parts in this version for brass. Also, the choirs might be placed some distance apart. The original version of Psalm I is for two four-part choirs, one of mixed voices and one of tenors and basses. (The original also calls for continuo accompaniment, but, as in similar works of Gabrieli, the choral parts sound complete in themselves.) Composer/arranger David Fetter (b. 1938) is a Trombone faculty member at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Also a conductor, his works are performed in concert, at festivals, and in educational settings in the U.S. and Europe and they have been recorded by leading soloists. Mr. Fetter is a former member of the Cleveland Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Radio/Telefis Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, the U.S. Army Band, and other ensembles, where he performed for conductors who included George Szell, Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, James Levine, Sergiu Comissiona, and David Zinman. At the Eastman School of Music he was a trombone student of Emory Remington and a member of the Eastman Wind Ensemble under Frederick Fennell. Sound Visions 2 for 4 Trombones is a composition by the Dresden author, musicologist and composer Friedbert Streller (born December 21, 1931 in Hohburg near Wurzen; †December 24, 2017 in Dresden). In addition to his musicological activities and teaching at the Dresden Music Academy Carl Maria von Weber, Friedbert Streller also devoted himself to composition throughout his life. The piece, composed in 2011, was premiered posthumously at his memorial service at the Dresden Tolkewitz cemetery by Tobias Hasselt, of the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig, Eckhard Wiegräbe and Uwe Gebel, of the MDR Symphony Orchestra, and Jörg Richter, of the Elbland Philharmonic. The making of separate parts was dispensed with. Due to the complex nature of the interplay of the individual parts, it makes sense to make music from the score. Although not expressly prescribed by the composer, the use of an alto trombone is strongly recommended for performing the 1st part! (Note: The download includes 2 differently formatted versions of the piece, in DIN A4 (for Europe etc.) and in US Letter (for US). )

Published by Woods Only, Arrangements (A0.1123871). This easy arrangement for trombone quartet was written to be uncomplicated to perform and understand the structure of the piece. It can be freely played by beginning students, because of the ease imposed on the piece; however, this does not prevent it from being played by professionals and music teachers. It is also ideal for academic recitals, student method and ceremonies that are arranged in the same way as the piece contains. The original piece is part of Johann Sebastian Bach's Suite No. 3 for orchestra, in D Major, BWV 1068, written for Prince Leopold of Anhalt. The so-called Air on the G String dates from one of these latter employments. In the service of the Prince of Cöthen, Bach composed not only the famous Brandenburg Concertos, but also several orchestral suites, from the third of which comes the Air on the G String. This curious title derives from a later arrangement of this piece for violin solo, in which the melody is played entirely on the lower, higher string of the instrument.

Edward Elgar composed his Variations on an Original Theme for Orchestra ("Enigma"), Op. 36, commonly referred to as the Enigma Variations, in 1898?99. It is a set of fourteen variations on a hidden "theme" that is, in Elgar's words, "not played". It is Elgar's best-known large-scale composition, for both the music itself and the enigma behind it. Nimrod is the 9th variation from this.
