Here is a description by composer Henry Wolking of his beautifully expressive new work for trombone quartet, Another Today.Another Today for trombone quartet was composed in the spring of 2020. This will most certainly join a long list of other compositions written by homebound composers during the beginning of the worldwide pandemic. Another Today is a seven and a half minute single movement concert work with several contrasting sections. Though hard to categorize, it is lively, energetic, and highly expressive. I rate it at the medium-difficult level of difficulty. The ranges are moderate but are highly rhythmic. I feel it is one of the most expressive chamber brass works of my career.

British Baroque composer Matthew Locke was hired by the royal court to write brass music and in the case of this work, for the Coronation of King Charles II in 1661. Music for His Majesty's Sackbuts for Trombone Quartet, beautifully arranged by Mark. J. LaFratta, originally included cornetts along with the sackbuts. This arrangement for Trombone Quartet (Trombone 1 has parts in alto and tenor clefs) contains 8 movements: Ayre, Courante I, Allemande I, Courante II, Allemande II, Pavan Allemande, Sarabanda and Allemande III. This glorious arrangement of Matthew Locke's suite of Baroque Dance music of about 13.5 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers and contains a moderate amount of optional ornamentation.

It was commissioned by the students of my colleague and friend, trombone professor, Donald Babcock. They are Daniel Larson, Manuel Smith, Jack Porath, and Kyle Wickham. These fine trombonists gave the premiere of 95@500 during the 2017 EMU Music Now Fest, February 16, 2017. When I received the request to write something for them, I took the opportunity to fulfill my wish to write a piece to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Reformation. The title refers to Martin Luther's nailing 95 theses on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, October 31, 1517. This act began a revolution in the Christian church that had great consequences. One major change was the creation of more simple music that could be sung by the congregation instead of a trained choir. Hence, the Lutheran chorale was born. It is not known exactly when Martin Luther wrote Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott, but it is thought to have been written between 1527-1529. A copy exists with his signature that can be viewed on the Internet. Luther wrote the melody with no harmony, but many composers have since harmonized it. About two hundred years after Ein feste Burg was written, Bach used it in his Chorale Cantata, BWV 80, to be sung on Reformation Day. Luther had set it with irregular rhythms and that gave rise to the unique rhythms in this set of variations. However, the last variation follows the well-known regular meter.

Psalm 1 by Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672), is taken from his collection of choral settings of several of the biblical Psalms of David, in which Schütz continued the polychoral tradition he had absorbed in Venice as a student of Giovanni Gabrieli. Schütz indicated in his preface to the Psalms, published in 1619, that due to limits on performance during the Thirty Years War, alternate instruments or voices could be employed as available. As Psalm 1 was composed for two choirs of voices, it might be an attractive option to double the parts in this version for brass. Also, the choirs might be placed some distance apart. The original version of Psalm I is for two four-part choirs, one of mixed voices and one of tenors and basses. (The original also calls for continuo accompaniment, but, as in similar works of Gabrieli, the choral parts sound complete in themselves.) Composer/arranger David Fetter (b. 1938) is a Trombone faculty member at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Also a conductor, his works are performed in concert, at festivals, and in educational settings in the U.S. and Europe and they have been recorded by leading soloists. Mr. Fetter is a former member of the Cleveland Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Radio/Telefis Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, the U.S. Army Band, and other ensembles, where he performed for conductors who included George Szell, Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, James Levine, Sergiu Comissiona, and David Zinman. At the Eastman School of Music he was a trombone student of Emory Remington and a member of the Eastman Wind Ensemble under Frederick Fennell. Lisa Albrecht’s beautiful arrangement for Trombone quartet is based on the 1837 setting by Robert Pearsall, the one of the favored by many choirs and their organists. The melody was so popular that many composers have tried their hand at arranging it including Buxtehude, Bach, Liszt and Dello Joio. This arrangement of about 3 minutes can be performed by intermediate to advanced players. Trombone I is in tenor clef and the rest of the parts are in bass clef and can be performed by intermediate level players.

Trois Chansons (Three Songs) is a work by Maurice Ravel originally composed for a cappella choir written in 1915 in the spirit of nursery rhymes, with a Renaissance almost archaic sounding atmosphere.Ravel composed the Three Songs (Nicolette, Trois beaux oiseaux du Paradis and Ronde) in response to World War I while he was waiting to be drafted and he dedicated the songs to three people who might help him enlist in the military. The common theme in all the Songs is loss.Mr. Sauer has beautifully arranged the Trois Chansons for 4 Trombones. They are appropriate for advanced performers and total about 7-minutes in length.
