Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792648). Creole Trombone is a jazz composition with ragtime and New Orleans overtones written by Kid Ory and first recorded in 1921. It was one of the first recordings of a black orchestra. He recorded the piece several times, including one with Louis Armstrong. Jeremy Kempton has made a great arrangement for Trombone Quartet for moderately advanced performers including an open 8-bar solo section.

Published by James Haynor (A0.782216). William Byrd (birth date variously given as c.1539/40 or 1543 – 4 July 1623), was an English composer of the Renaissance. He wrote in many of the forms current in England at the time, including various types of sacred and secular polyphony, keyboard (the so-called Virginalist school), and consort music. Although he produced sacred music for Anglican services, sometime during the 1570s he became a Roman Catholic and wrote Catholic sacred music later in his life. Ave Verum Corpus written for four voices is a great example of his work and transcribes well for trombone quartet. ( Duration 3:30 )

Chorus of the PriestsA new suite in 4 movements (including the famous 3 chord Fanfare) from Mozart's Magic Flute opera beautifully set for Trombone Quartet and Bass Trombone Solo or Bass Vocalist. The total work is about 10 minutes in length and is for moderately advanced players (good high school and up). The most famous of the movements is Sarastro's Aria which can be performed by a Bass Trombone (5th part) or Bass vocalist. The lyrics are in the original German and the movement is in the key of F (original). The Suite is of moderately advanced difficulty, in tenor and bass clefs. Endurance is not a problem. The highest note is a single high C in the 1st Trombone part. The other movements are delightful in beautiful choral style and will add depth to any recital or concert.

Lisa Albrecht’s beautiful arrangement for Trombone quartet is based on the 1837 setting by Robert Pearsall, the one of the favored by many choirs and their organists. The melody was so popular that many composers have tried their hand at arranging it including Buxtehude, Bach, Liszt and Dello Joio. This arrangement of about 3 minutes can be performed by intermediate to advanced players. Trombone I is in tenor clef and the rest of the parts are in bass clef and can be performed by intermediate level players.

The third movement of the Piano Sonata No. 12 in A-flat Major, Op.26, Beethoven’s “Funeral March No. 2†is played at state funerals in the UK, including the funerals of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The subtitle of this movement (“Marcia Funebre, sulla morte d'un Eroeâ€) translates to “Funeral March, relating to the death of a heroâ€, and was orchestrated by Beethoven for the incidental music to Johann Duncker's play “Leonore Prohaska†(WoO 96). This was one of the pieces played during the procession at Beethoven’s funeral in 1827. This arrangement includes alternative parts for treble-clef trombones.
