The 1st movement opens with a majestic unison theme, as the four trombones announce the arrival of the King. Tea Dance begins with a bass trombone cadenza, and develops into a lyrical representation of an elegant afternoon occasion. The Castle portrays the inner workings of a Royal household, from the bustling to the regal. The trombonists encounter a brief yet playful free section before making their way to the grand finale.The King’s Trio allows the sonority of the bass trombone to be heard while combining elements from the classical, jazz, and 20th century music traditions.

Published by Phil Thrift (A0.955716). This trombone quartet arrangement of Hector Berlioz’ Symphonie Fantastique contains all the well-known themes of the full orchestral symphony. The beginning is identical with the original, but then proceeds immediately to the March to the Scaffold of the fourth movement. The famous idée fixe of the symphony is first heard at measure 72, and this is followed by other themes from the first movement. The adagio at measure 164 re-creates the pastoral duet of the symphony’s third movement. As indicated on the charts, the first trombone should play this section offstage (as for the oboist in the original), while the others remain on stage. If this is not possible, then the first trombone should play this section muted. This very reflective interlude is followed by my personal favorite, the wondrously jolly waltz from the symphony’s second movement. This is followed by the Witches’ Round Dance, a sort of fugue, which leads to the dies irae – played in four octaves here, with a high Eflat to test your first trombonist! The idée fixe is stated once again before the arrangement concludes in the same way as the original symphony.This is a light-hearted arrangement that is not intended to re-create exactly the grandeur of the original with its huge orchestral forces. Lasting up to 8 min 50 sec, depending on how fast you take some sections, this piece will require some stamina, but every player does get a break and the lead shifts between all four trombones.If you’re not familiar with the full orchestral version, then I suggest you listen to it before attempting this arrangement.Alternative tenor clef parts are included for the tenor trombones.

The transcription remains faithful to the structure, with only one change in tone, so that it is comfortable for all the instruments in the formation, as well as being used as an activity in ensemble practice among musicians of different traditions. Beethoven's Turkish March (Op. 113) is the 4th movement of the operatic work: The Ruins of Athens, a set of incidental pieces written in 1812 by Ludwig van Beethoven, where the melody was originally written in 1809 as Theme with Six Variations for Piano, Op. 76. The work was written to accompany the play of the same name by August von Kotzebue, for the dedication of a new theater in Pest. Perhaps the best known part of the composition is the Marcia alla turca, In Latin America, this movement became known in Jean-Jacques Perrey's version (who titled it The Elephant never Forgets) since it was used as the opening theme of the successful Mexican TV comedy El Chavo del Ocho. The opening and the turkish march are often performed separately, and the other pieces in this set are not often heard.

Irving Berlin emigrated to the United States in 1893 at the age of 5 with his parents, fleeing Jewish persecution in Russia. He died in 1989 with over 1500 songs to his credit.The published version of the song, A Pretty Girl Is Like A Melody, was an excerpt from a longer version used in the Ziegfeld Follies. It was the hit song of the 1919 Follies and became the theme song. It was also used frequently in Miss America pageants prior to 1955. Berlin believed this song was in the top 5 of the hundreds of songs he wrote. The arranger, Bob Coil, is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of music, where he studied bass trombone with Betty Glover. Dr. Coil is the leader of the Bones of Cincinnatus trombone ensemble in Cincinnati, OH.

In addition to the pieces inspired by individual pictures, the suite contains several variations of the 'Promenade' theme, which depicts Mussorgsky roving through the exhibition, now leisurely, now briskly in order to come close to a picture that had attracted his attention, and at times sadly, thinking of his departed friend. (Vladimir Stasov). This arrangement presents the opening version of the 'Promenade', adapted to suit a group of 4 trombones (1 bass trombone or tuba) or similar group of bass clef instruments. The ranges have been reduced to accommodate young or developing players. The 1st part goes no higher than F4, and the bass part no lower than Bb1 (optionally A1). The melody is mainly in the 1st part, with passages in the 2nd and 3rd parts from time to time, but as the texture of Mussorgksy's composition is almost exclusively homophonic, all parts have equal importance. I have inserted additional dynamics and accents to aid phrasing, and adapted the ending to suit a standalone performance.
