In the rubato part, the player must improvise with the specified chords. In addition, rapid arpeggio and the transition of the harmony by the finger pedal is also a point. Still, the player is free to use the stop. This work can be also played as a piano work. Duration : 6 minutes around. This work was commissioned by the executive committee of the 2016 International Competition for Early Music (Yamanashi) as a set contemporary piece in the final round of harpsichord section. Published by Michael Butkus-Bomier (A0.862503). Thirds, seven-note scalar runs, and syncopation characterize this final entry in the series of Modal Inventions. The Locrian mode was not a true church mode. It was given that name by jazz musicians, who wanted a modal designation for each of the seven modes for every major scale. This piece uses cut-time, and a half-note figure as its subject. The countersubject is a scale. Each exposition and its reverse end with a syncopated series of thirds, like the E Major Invention of Bach. These elements mix and match themselves through the piece, which ends on a B7 chord without a 3rd or 5th degree, giving the finale its ambiguous, Locrian sound. All nine inventions make a nice program for the opening of a three-element recital. They also make an excellent introduction into the world of modern music, since the two-part invention format is familiar, and the scalar aspect is also a musical staple throughout the eras, even though the modal derivatives rather than the parent major scales are used. Published by Michael Butkus-Bomier (A0.862496). D# Phrygian is all five sharps, and the white keys E and B. Not as scary as it appears! This piece has what is, in effect, a one-measure subject, and a one-measure countersubject. They play against each other for most of the piece, emphasizing various pitches, until they come together, as each one is played in both voices, and the piece concludes with some nice contrary motion on the main subject. Articulation and the four quarter-notes of the countersubject give the piece a stately but not too somber mood. Bach liked Eb minor better, but I picked sharps for my own edification, as I am quite used to flats. MBB.

Fear not, as one of the subjects trills throughout, between the two white keys in the scale, and their upper and lower adjacent black keys. The piece is in 12/8 and the melodic theme has a three-2/8 note turn feel to it, with staccato notes sprinkled in. More playable and readable than might it might seem upon reading the title! I'd be foolish to write a piece in this mode without making it something do-able! MBB.

Published by Michael Butkus-Bomier (A0.862562). A familiar song or tune is one of the best way to introduce a modern or at least unfamiliar way of playing the piano. Here is a spritely carol with a very specific set of musical parameters that belies its flowing sound. The right hand melody, so familiar to many of us, with its melismatic phrases, is set in fifths and fourths ONLY. the accompaniment, in the left hand bass, is octaves and fifths, filled in at the top of the bottom with a whole step. A very restricted set of materials, yet they complement the song in its simplicity and verve. This arrangement is NOT as suitable for vocal accompaniment as the others in the series. Melismas in 5ths, not easy to sing along with. But, fun to play! MBB.
