Samba de Simão is an exciting original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for one Trumpet and one Alto Saxophone.This duet is based on the style of Samba. With roots in West African music, modern Samba emerged in Rio de Janiero, Brazil at the beginning of the twentieth century. There are many forms, both sung and instrumental, and the Samba rhythm has found its way around the world into jazz and modern electronic pop and dance music. Samba has become a cultural symbol of Brazil, with Rio’s famous Samba schools producing theatrical and ultra-professional showpieces for the annual carnival.If you play to an advanced intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. Rhythms should be lightly articulated, the melody should always flow, the two underlying strong beats in each bar should always be felt, and following the articulation in the score will help convey the style. The Prince of Denmark’s March is better known nowadays as the Trumpet Voluntary and is often used in wedding ceremonies. It was in fact written for organ, with the melody played on thetrumpet stop. Written around 1700, for many years this piece was mistakenly attributed to Henry Purcell. Only recently has it been established that the composer was Jeremiah Clarke, organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. It is somewhat ironic that this composer of a wedding mainstay was himself a victim of unrequited love. He consequently shot himself in the cathedral graveyard. This full version is arranged as a duet for Trumpet and Alto Saxophone and the performance time is around two and a half minutes. Of course, performers, especially at weddings, may wish to abridge and shorten the arrangement. This is easily done as the different sections are self-contained and the repeat may be ignored. The complete performance on youtube and the short audio sample are from the Clarinet Duet version of this arrangement. Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances, with both parts enjoying melodic interest. Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to help with strict time, full tone and dynamics. The song was jointly written and performed by Paul McCartney and John Lennon. George Harrison and Ringo Starr took no part in the recording and there were no instrumental contributions by any of the Beatles. The song was inspired by a newspaper story about a missing teenage girl. The girl in question turned up safe and sound eventually, and had, by complete coincidence, met the Beatles at a TV recording a few year’s earlier.This version of She’s Leaving Home is arranged as a duet for one Trumpet and one Alto Saxophone. It is best known in the English-speaking world as Here Comes the Bride. Queen Victoria’s daughter used the music for her marriage in 1858, and its popularity has endured ever since. The song was inspired by a newspaper story about a missing teenage girl.
