Intermediate Progressive Etudes By David Kovins - Vibraphone Method Book for 2 and 4 Mallets The Vibraphone Virtuosity Series features material that will help develop a contemporary vibist's technique and musicianship. The volume includes: -33 multi-stylistic etudes -Chromatic exercises -Whole-tone scales -Studies in perfect fourths Among the techniques covered in the etudes are: -2 mallet playing -4-mallet playing -Mallet dampening -Pedaling -Musical Phrasing Suggested stickings are provided, as well as the author's commentary about each exercise and etude. In addition, selected etudes contain chord symbols to allow for improvisational opportunities. David Kovins founded the School for Musical Performance in Brooklyn, New York in 1980, where he teaches mallet-keyboard percussion, drumset, and piano. He has performed with the Jerome Robbins Dance Company, the Manhattan Percussion Ensemble, cabaret performers Anita Morris and Wayland Flowers., and Keyboardist Jordan Rudess, and Kovins leads his own Vibraphone-based group that records and performs in the New York area.

There has been a lot of tragedy in this world. One thing that I wish to ask for is peace in the world. I choose to approach helping towards it in the way I know how, by music. I wrote a Vibraphone solo, utilizing a slight amount of spoken text and quartal harmonies, to emphasize the need for peace our world today. It is a short piece that is in free time, allowing the performer to interpret the speed their own way. All spoken text are the words underneath the staff.Commissioned by John Zazo - Percussion Performance student at the University of Akron.

This work is an adaptation of a longer piece composed for the selection rounds of the Sydney International Piano Competition. It was originally scored for five pianos playing simultaneously, hence the derby idea whereby each piano was pitted against the other in a rambunctious race till the very end ! It explores the less common use of the vibraphone for extended passages with the pedal kept up to create a staccato effect, intricate weaving melodic lines using unconventional scales and sophisticated rhythmic interplay between the vibraphone and piano parts. It is included in the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) Syllabus for Percussion from Grade 7.
