It was the first example of a major composer using the human voice as prominently as the instruments in a symphony, thus creating a far-reaching work that set the tone for the symphonic form that was to be adopted by Romantic composers. This is the last complete symphony composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. The choral symphony, better known as the Ninth Symphony or The Ninth, is one of the best known works in the Western repertoire, considered both an icon and predecessor of Romantic music, and one of Beethoven's great masterpieces, where it was first performed on May 7, 1824, the same year it was completed, at the Kärntnertortheater in Vienna, Austria. This haunting piece of music from Beethoven's 7th Symphony has been carefully abridged and arranged for Saxophone Quintet, scored for Soprano, 2 Altos, Tenor and Baritone Saxophone. It is sympathetic to the original music and should be easily accessible for intermediate to advanced players. There is also an optional percussion part on Timpani (Bb and F) that can easily be played on old fashioned hand tuned instruments, and will lend a bit more gravitas to any performance. The piece is very musically satisfying to play and will sit well on any concert or recital programme. The duration of the piece is about 4:50 minutes. The PDF is 24 pages long (A4 portrait) containing a full score and parts. Printing guidance - Score (pages1-13 print A4 double sided), all parts p14-24 (with the exception of Timpani p24) are designed to fit 2 x A4 pages on A3). Look out for other similar works and arrangements by the same publisher.
