Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.811137). Gustav Mahler wrote the song cycle Kindertotenlieder (Songs on the Death of Children) in 1904 for voice and orchestra. The lyrics are from a group of 428 poems by Friedrich Rückert. Mahler chose five of the poems to set to music. The music is very intimate, deeply felt and mournful. Erik Saras and Charles Vernon have beautifully transcribed and edited the complete work of 25 minutes length for Alto Trombone and Piano accompaniment for very advanced level performers.

The lyrics remind us that in our busyness we need to pause and consider our motives: In the glare of earthly pleasure, in the fight for earthly treasure...Have you forgotten God? This trio arrangement uses the same harmonies on all three verses making it easy to master in a short time. Though the song is bold and communicates a sense of urgency, it should not be sung so fast the meaning of the verses are overshadowed by the powerful chorus. The original hymn included 5 verses and a lyric sheet is provided showing these additional verses. The vocal parts are classified as intermediate; however the piano accompaniment is more in line with advanced-intermediate skills. Set in the key of C major, the vocal ranges are as follows: SOPRANO 1 - E4 to E5; SOPRANO 2 - C4 to C5; ALTO - G3 to G4. The purchase price includes the 7 page combined score plus a 2 page score with vocal parts only and a separate 3 page score with piano accompaniment only. The Concerto Grosso for Three Trombones with Piano accompaniment by Lindol Mitchell is a realization for Piano of the original orchestral score by Jeremy Niles Kempton. The original orchestral work was composed in 1961 as part of Mitchell’s Doctoral dissertation at the Eastman School of Music and was first performed in 1963 at a memorial concert for the composer after his untimely death. The solo performers were nine students of Emory Remington, including Ralph Sauer and Donald King. The work is is subtitled in stile Barocco and is in three movements. Movement I begins with an somber introductory Adagio followed by an Allegro in the style of a Bach Fugue led by the three soloists. Movement II is a slow and serious Larghetto in C minor. Movement III is a Presto in D minor in a Toccata style and is full of many mixed meter bars that add little little rhythmic surprises along the way. The 13-minute work is appropriate for advanced performers. The hand copied score and parts Concerto Grosso were rediscovered in the Sibley Library at the Eastman School of Music by Jeremy Kempton who then engraved and proofed them. He performed the work in 2011 with colleagues for the first time since its premier in 1963.

His particular skill was in capturing the spirit of poems in his melodies, making him Iceland's foremost lyric composer.The arrangement written here for string quartet is based on VÃkingur Ólafsson's beautiful interpretation.
