This version is arranged as a duet in a Jazz Waltz style for one Flute and one Oboe. Click on the YouTube link above to listen to a full length performance of this arrangement played on Clarinet.We Three Kings was written in 1857 by a Pennsylvanian rector, John Henry Hopkins Jr. His friends and family encouraged him to publish the carol, and after it first appeared in print in 1863, its popularity spread to an international audience. With a performance time around three minutes, this version of We Three Kings is perfect for seasonal celebrations and concert performances, both formal and informal. The jazz waltz style is a fun and fresh take on this familiar traditional tune.We Three Kings is arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. Rhythms are syncopated, as one would expect in a jazz waltz, and there is plenty of articulation detail to help deliver an authentic swing style. The melody is played three times, with a short intro and outro. This arrangement is suitable for players at an intermediate or early advanced level. March of the Three Kings for Flute / Oboe Duet arranged at the Intermediate level.The Crusades, those religious expeditions to rescue the holy places in Palestine from the Muslims, created an enormous interest in both faith and fighting in the Middle Ages. French peasants from Provence in the 13th century, when the tune for this March of the Kings was being sung and danced to, must have endowed the Three Kings of the Christmas story with all the virtues and appearance of their own folk heroes nearer at hand. These were the French dukes, clad in gleaming armor, carrying brilliant banners and bejeweled shields, who fought for the Pope far more willingly than they would have for the lives of their own serfs. Hence the martial references in this text, sung to a tune that is perhaps even older than the verses. Georges Bizet, composer of the opera Carmen, used the same tune as a farandole, or stately dance, in his incidental music for Alphonse Daudet’s play L’Arlesienne (The Woman from Aries). The March of the Three Kings has been arranged in the woodwind friendly key of g minor at the Intermediate level. Performance time: approx. 2 minutes.

The words and music of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot are credited to Wallis Willis, a Native American freedman from Oklahoma. A local minister transcribed the song in 1865 and within a few years it became a firm gospel favourite. In recent times Swing Low, Sweet Chariot has been adopted by the Civil Rights movement on one hand, and the England rugby team on the other. Swing Low, Sweet Chariot is simply arranged in keys and range best suited to the instruments. The hymn is played three and a half times, once as a ballad, then twice in a slow rock style, before returning to the ballad at the end. The Rudolph story was written by Marks’ brother-in-law, Robert L May, a decade earlier. The success of the song was guaranteed when it was recorded by Gene Autry, a huge star at the time. Initially Gene Autry didn’t like the song and was only persuaded to record it by his wife. She obviously knew best as Rudolph went on to become the second best-selling Christmas record of all time after White Christmas, with versions by everyone from the Jackson Five to Alvin and the Chipmunks.
