This song began life in 1930 as a nine-bar phrase with the working title There's No Stopping Me Now. Its title phrase Nice work if you can get it came from an English magazine. It was one of nine songs the Gershwin brothers wrote for the movie A Damsel in Distress in which it was performed by Fred Astaire with backing vocals by The Stafford Sisters. The song was published in 1937. The first jazz recording of the work was by Tommy Dorsey three weeks after the release of the film. The song was recorded by many jazz singers and adopted by bebop instrumentalists; Jerry Newman recorded pianist Thelonious Monk performing the tune in 1941 at Minton's Playhouse, a nightclub closely connected with early bebop, and he subsequently recorded it several times.

I strongly recommend that you watch the video first as I explain and demonstrate how the Bebop Dominant Scale works well in improvisation with all the chord notes falling on the downbeats. Rather than trying to learn them all in all 12 keys straight away I would use them for reference and try to apply them to dominant 7th chords in jazz standards. The more standards that you apply them to the more keys you will cover but it will feel less like an exercise.

Ambrose's 1993 non-fiction book of the same name. The theme music was composed by the late Michael Kamen, known for his scores for titles such as the Die Hard films, X-Men, Memento as well as several HBO series. He had also collaborated previously with Tom Hanks, who produced the score for Band of Brothers. The song became Wonder's third number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and his first number-one on the Easy Listening chart. Joy to the World is a song written by Hoyt Axton and made famous by the band Three Dog Night. The song is also popularly known by its opening lyric, Jeremiah was a bullfrog. Some of the words are nonsensical. Axton wanted to persuade his record producers to record a new melody he had written, and the producers asked him to sing any words to the tune. A member of Three Dog Night said that the original lyrics to the song were Jeremiah was a prophet but no one liked it. When Hoyt Axton performed the song to the group, two of the three main vocalists – Danny Hutton and Cory Wells – rejected the song, but Chuck Negron felt that the band needed a silly song to help bring the band back together as a working unit. It was written for the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz and was sung by actress Judy Garland. Arlen would often carry blank pieces of music manuscript in his pockets to jot down short melodic ideas. He described how the inspiration for the melody to Over the Rainbow came to him suddenly while his wife Anya drove: I said to Mrs. Arlen... 'let's go to Grauman's Chinese ... You drive the car, I don't feel too well right now.' I wasn't thinking of work. I wasn't consciously thinking of work, I just wanted to relax. And as we drove by Schwab's Drug Store on Sunset I said, 'Pull over, please.' ... Their manager advised them to take a short break from their work and go to a movie theater to see the film. Richard and Karen were immediately taken with this song and agreed that it should be the follow-up to their previous hits. After returning home, they recorded it, released it in December, and it went gold in only two months. The Carpenters' success with this song helped it win the 1970 Oscar for Best Song.

Sixteen Tons is a song written by Merle Travis about a coal miner, based on life in the mines of Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. The line another day older and deeper in debt from the chorus came from a letter written by Travis's brother John. This and the line I owe my soul to the company store are a reference to the trucking system and to debt bondage. Under this scrip system, workers were not paid cash; rather they were paid with non-transferable credit vouchers that could be exchanged only for goods sold at the company store. This made it impossible for workers to store up cash savings.

Always On My Mind did not see completion until late 1971. Songwriter-guitarist Wayne Carson had about two verses done, with the working title You Were Always On My Mind. He had been occupied in Memphis on a project that required him to stay ten days longer, and he phoned his wife in Springfield, Missouri, to apologize for the delay. She was angry, and he replied: Well, I know I’ve been gone a lot, but I’ve been thinking about you all the time. His words struck him as potential song material, and he quickly ended the call so he could capture the idea on paper.
