In December 1961, in the famous Venetian Room at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco, Tony Bennett first sang I Left My Heart in San Francisco. In the audience that night were San Francisco mayor George Christopher and future mayor Joseph L. Alioto. From the 1960s through the 1980s, at San Francisco's premier supper club the Venetian Room, Bennett sang the city song.

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas is a song written in 1943 by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane and introduced by Judy Garland in the 1944 MGM musical Meet Me in St. Louis. Frank Sinatra later recorded a version with modified lyrics. Some of the original lyrics penned by Martin were rejected before filming began. When presented with the original draft lyric, Garland, her co-star Tom Drake and director Vincente Minnelli criticized the song as depressing, and asked Martin to change the lyrics. Though he initially resisted, Martin made several changes to make the song more upbeat. For example, the lines It may be your last / Next year we may all be living in the past became Let your heart be light / Next year all our troubles will be out of sight. How's that for an improvment?

The tune was written on a single scrap of paper by Bilk and handed over to Leon Young (1916-1991) who crafted the string arrangement, including the characteristic harmonic shifts at the very end. In May 1969, the crew of Apollo 10 took Stranger on the Shore on their mission to the moon. Gene Cernan, a member of the crew, included the tune on a cassette tape used in the command module of the Apollo spacecraft. On 26 May 1962, Stranger on the Shore became the first British recording to reach number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

The origin of the idea of a yellow ribbon as remembrance may have been the 19th-century practice that some women allegedly had of wearing a yellow ribbon in their hair to signify their devotion to a husband or sweetheart serving in the U.S. Cavalry. The song 'Round Her Neck She Wears a Yeller Ribbon, tracing back centuries but copyrighted by George A. Norton in 1917, and later inspiring the John Wayne movie She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, is a reference to this. The symbol of a yellow ribbon became widely known in civilian life in the 1970s as a reminder that an absent loved one, either in the military or in jail, would be welcomed home on their return. Stella by Starlight is one of the most popular standards, ranked number 10 by the website jazzstandards.com. Its May 1947 recording by Harry James and his orchestra reached the 21st place in the pop charts. Two months later, the recording by Frank Sinatra with Axel Stordahl and his orchestra also rose to the 21st position. This arrangement includes the lyrics.

One early recording of the song was notable in that it was Frank Sinatra's first solo recording (Bluebird 11463 in 1942). A review in Billboard called the recording a sparkling example of song with Sinatra's singing and Axel Stordahl's musical direction. Sinatra also made studio recordings of the song for Columbia records in 1947 and Capitol Records in 1957. On May 19, 2015, Bob Dylan sang it on the second-to-last episode of The Late Show with David Letterman.

Although known primarily for his trumpet playing as the leader of the Tijuana Brass, Alpert sang lead vocals on this solo recording, arranged by Bacharach. The recording originated when Alpert, while visiting at Bacharach's office, asked, Say, Burt, do you happen to have any old compositions lying around that you and Hal never recorded; maybe one I might be able to use? Alpert decided that the song should be released as a single recording, and it reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart in June of that year, remaining in the top position for four weeks.
