Another epic, long-form composition from the pen of pianist and composer Julian Hartwell. Modern jazz meets forward-thinking harmony, with plenty of room for creative improvisation over several different vamp sections and bass figures. Probably one of the more ambitious tunes from the JHP repertoire, this tune has yet to be formally recorded. The type of chart that requires two music stands, easy. Great for advanced jazz ensembles of any size, even trio alone will get plenty of mileage out of this composition. Good luck and God-speed to the brave musical souls who take this on...it will be very satisfying by the time the last note of the F section is sounded! In the vein of modern jazz composers like: Aaron Parks, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Brian Blade.

Anthropology (also known as Thriving from a Riff or Thriving on a Riff) is a bebop-style jazz composition that is credited to Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Parker stated in 1949 that Gillespie had played no part in its writing, and that others had added the trumpeter as co-composer. It is a contrafact, being based on the harmony of I Got Rhythm.

The original French language song was La goualante du pauvre Jean (The Ballad of Poor John), with music by Marguerite Monnot and words by René Rouzaud. A recording of the tune by Les Baxter's orchestra (Capitol Records catalog number 3336, with the flip side Theme from 'Helen of Troy') was a number-one hit on the Billboard chart in the US in 1956: for four weeks on the Best Sellers in Stores chart, for six weeks on the Most Played by Jockeys and Hot 100 charts, and for three weeks on the Most Played on Jukeboxes chart.

You Go to My Head is a 1938 popular song composed by J. Fred Coots with lyrics by Haven Gillespie. Numerous versions of the song have been recorded, and it has since become a pop and jazz standard. Alec Wilder terms Coots' melody a minor masterpiece. According to Ted Gioia, “’You Go to my Head’ is an intricately constructed affair with plenty of harmonic movement. The song starts in a major key, but from the second bar onward, Mr. Coots seems intent on creating a feverish dream quality tending more to the minor mode. The release builds on the drama, and the final restatement holds some surprises as well. The piece would be noteworthy even if it lacked such an exquisite coda, but those last eight bars convey a sense of resigned closure to the song that fittingly matches the resolution of the lyrics.

Color allows quick understanding of the sections and form of the tune, the rhythmic hits, and the counter-melodies. Special care has been taken to clearly indicate intros, sections, solos, and codas/outros. These form-based markings are in GREEN.  Special care has also been taken to notate the rhythmic hits. Hits are often partially or completely missing from standard fake book versions of the tune. Hits are notated above the staff, in RED. Finally, any counter-melodies or harmonies appear in reduced size, in BLUE.Melodies often written in straight rhythm in standard fake books have been rewritten in a swing style, or “As Played By†some of the all-time jazz greats. Some of the tunes have been transposed from their standard fake book keys to an easier, better-sounding key for Bb saxophone.Slurs have been added to all the Bb parts for smooth and consistent jazz articulation on the Bb saxophone. A duplicate Bb part, without the slurs, is also included (marked with an asterisk for Bb* Instruments), for Bb players who would prefer to customize their own articulation.All tunes have been vetted for playability and accuracy.The arranger, Rob Ames, is a soprano saxophone player from New Hampshire and the Boston, MA area.
