In response to a publisher's request for a simpler song, Bart Howard wrote a cabaret ballad[which he titled In Other Words. A publisher tried to make him change some words from fly me to the Moon to take me to the Moon, but Howard refused. Many years later Howard commented that ... it took me 20 years to find out how to write a song in 20 minutes.

The song, which was written by Babyface, was the lead single from their second album. It was a commercial success, spending 14 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100. It was also the third best performing song in the 1990s on Billboard, as well as ranking on Billboard Greatest of All-Time chart. This beautiful evening hymn is a perfect pairing of a solemn, contemplative melody with uplifting, scriptural lyrics that remind us of the hope we have in Christ, in this life and the next. I found this song in a very old hymnbook, so old that you could feel the raised print on the page, and loved the lyrics so much! However, I felt that a minor melody would suit it in a really special way, so I rewrote it with new choral harmonization using a mixture of minor modes to match the evening mood of the song. This piece works well as a choir anthem for evensong, funerals, or for any more contemplative, low-key service, and is written in a comfortable, singable range for everyday singers. I found this song in a very old hymnbook, so old that you could feel the raised print on the page, and loved the lyrics so much! However, I felt that a minor melody would suit it in a really special way, so I rewrote it with new choral harmonization using a mixture of minor modes to match the evening mood of the song. This piece works well as a choir anthem for evensong, funerals, or for any more contemplative, low-key service, and is written in a comfortable, singable range for everyday singers. One account of the inspiration for the song is that, during her time at Radcliffe College, Ronell had been struck by the loveliness of the willow trees on campus, and this simple observation became the subject of an intricate song. The song was rejected by publishers for several reasons. First, the song is dedicated to George Gershwin. A dedication to another writer was disapproved of at the time, so the first person presented with the song for publication, Saul Bornstein, passed it to Irving Berlin, who accepted it. Other reasons stated for its slow acceptance are that it was written by a woman and that its construction was unusually complex for a composition that was targeted at a commercial audience.

Georgia Brown, who was the first actress to play Nancy, introduced the song. I t is a love ballad expressing Nancy's love for her criminal boyfriend Bill Sikes despite his mistreatment of her. Its popularity grew by virtue of renditions by several popular singers, including Shirley Bassey who reached number two for 5 weeks on the United Kingdom charts with the song.
