Stand by Your Man is a song recorded by American country music artist Tammy Wynette, co-written by Wynette and Billy Sherrill. It was released on September 20, 1968, as the first single and title track from the album Stand by Your Man. It proved to be the most successful record of Wynette's career, and is one of the most familiar songs in country music. The song was placed at number one on CMT's list of the Top 100 Country Music Songs. The song received some criticism during the late 1960s-early 1970s women's liberation movement, as feminist groups deemed it to be too conservative, while, for others, the song made Wynette a spokeswoman for working-class housewives experiencing marital disappointments and changing gender roles in the late 1960s. However, Wynette herself said that she had not intended any social or political slant to it. In 1992, during a 60 Minutes interview regarding Bill Clinton's affair with Gennifer Flowers, Hillary Clinton remarked: I'm not sitting here, some little woman standing by my man like Tammy Wynette. The recording features a small group of musicians: Floyd Cramer on piano, Marvin Hughes on the vibraphone, Bob Moore on bass, Buddy Harman on drums, Hank Garland on guitar, and the Anita Kerr Singers providing the background vocals. Country music historian Bill Malone noted that He'll Have to Go in most respects represented a conventional country song, but its arrangement and the vocal chorus put this recording in the country pop vein. The song was then covered on Helen Reddy's 1972 album, I Am Woman. It was then recorded by American vocal duo, the Carpenters, for their 1973 album Now & Then and as the B-side of the Carpenters's single Please Mr. Postman. Three years later, This Masquerade was recorded by American singer and guitarist George Benson, who released it on his 1976 album, Breezin'. Benson's version, featuring Jorge Dalto on piano, was released as a single and became the first big hit of his career.

One account of the inspiration for the song is that, during her time at Radcliffe College, Ronell had been struck by the loveliness of the willow trees on campus, and this simple observation became the subject of an intricate song. The song was rejected by publishers for several reasons. First, the song is dedicated to George Gershwin. A dedication to another writer was disapproved of at the time, so the first person presented with the song for publication, Saul Bornstein, passed it to Irving Berlin, who accepted it. Other reasons stated for its slow acceptance are that it was written by a woman and that its construction was unusually complex for a composition that was targeted at a commercial audience.

According to Zé Dantas: His verses begin by singing the mandacaru, a cactus that does not depend on the rain to bloom, a phenomenon that, when it happens in the dry season, makes the caboclo believe that the thunderstorm is approaching. This superstition led us to establish a simile between the mandacaru flower, a prodromal sign of the rain that arrives giving the earth fecundity, and the girl who, getting sick of the doll, becomes a woman.
