The biggest-selling version of the song was recorded by Teresa Brewer with the Dixieland All Stars on 20 December 1949. It was also recorded by many artists on various labels and other hit versions in 1950 were by Carmen Cavallaro (reached No. 5), Freddy Martin (No. 5), Ames Brothers (No. 14), Hugo Winterhalter (No. 17) and Mickey Katz (No. 18). Some radio stations refused to play the record because of the thought that the lyric I'd do anything for you/Anything you'd want me to might be construed as indecent.

The song, released in the fall of 1959, went on to become a massive hit in both genres early in 1960. The song is about a man who's talking by telephone to the woman he loves, when he realizes that another man is with her. The recording features a small group of musicians: Floyd Cramer on piano, Marvin Hughes on the vibraphone, Bob Moore on bass, Buddy Harman on drums, Hank Garland on guitar, and the Anita Kerr Singers providing the background vocals. Country music historian Bill Malone noted that He'll Have to Go in most respects represented a conventional country song, but its arrangement and the vocal chorus put this recording in the country pop vein. It was written for the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz and was sung by actress Judy Garland. Arlen would often carry blank pieces of music manuscript in his pockets to jot down short melodic ideas. He described how the inspiration for the melody to Over the Rainbow came to him suddenly while his wife Anya drove: I said to Mrs. Arlen... 'let's go to Grauman's Chinese ... You drive the car, I don't feel too well right now.' I wasn't thinking of work. I wasn't consciously thinking of work, I just wanted to relax. And as we drove by Schwab's Drug Store on Sunset I said, 'Pull over, please.' ... The single topped charts in the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and Sweden. In the UK, it was the fourth highest selling single of the 1960s. The song's verse is a twelve-bar blues in structure, a formula that the Beatles seldom applied to their own material. When pressed by American journalists in 1966 to reveal the song's true meaning, McCartney stated: I think you can put any interpretation you want on anything, but when someone suggests that 'Can't Buy Me Love' is about a prostitute, I draw the line. He went on to say: The idea behind it was that all these material possessions are all very well, but they won't buy me what I really want. However, he was to comment later: It should have been 'Can Buy Me Love' when reflecting on the perks that money and fame had brought him.
