Barry Manilow's version reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in January 1976 after spending two weeks atop the Billboard adult contemporary chart in December 1975. It won a Grammy Award for Song of the Year and was nominated for Record of the Year in 1977. Johnston has stated that, for him, the I in the song is God. Manilow was initially reluctant to record the song, stating in his autobiography Sweet Life: The problem with the song was that if you didn't listen carefully to the lyric, you would think that the singer was singing about himself. It could be misinterpreted as a monumental ego trip.

A perfect hymn for funerals or a contemplative autumn service, reminding us of how swiftly life passes, just like the autumn leaves which are so soon gone. The original hymn was very beautiful but I thought a minor setting would be more fitting for the solemn lyrics, so I wrote an entirely new melody and choral arrangement, which can be found on all streaming platforms and Youtube, where lyric videos of this and other songs are readily available for church or personal use. All September and October long I've been going back to this song myself, as it captures the rich beauty and yet sadness of the autumn season, and somehow brings comfort amidst the fast-changing seasons of the earth and of our lives. Too racy,’†Alpert says. This album saw the band abandoning its Mexican-themed music, featuring mostly instrumental arrangements of popular songs, and also generating some major pop hits.

Stand by Your Man is a song recorded by American country music artist Tammy Wynette, co-written by Wynette and Billy Sherrill. It was released on September 20, 1968, as the first single and title track from the album Stand by Your Man. It proved to be the most successful record of Wynette's career, and is one of the most familiar songs in country music. The song was placed at number one on CMT's list of the Top 100 Country Music Songs. The song received some criticism during the late 1960s-early 1970s women's liberation movement, as feminist groups deemed it to be too conservative, while, for others, the song made Wynette a spokeswoman for working-class housewives experiencing marital disappointments and changing gender roles in the late 1960s. However, Wynette herself said that she had not intended any social or political slant to it. In 1992, during a 60 Minutes interview regarding Bill Clinton's affair with Gennifer Flowers, Hillary Clinton remarked: I'm not sitting here, some little woman standing by my man like Tammy Wynette. In addition to obvious references to the flag, it incorporates snippets of other popular songs, including one of his own. Cohan wrote it in 1906 for his stage musical George Washington, Jr. You're a Grand Old Flag quickly became the first song from a musical to sell over a million copies of sheet music. The original lyric for this perennial George M. Cohan favorite came, as Cohan later explained, from an encounter he had with a Civil War veteran who fought at Gettysburg. The two men found themselves next to each other and Cohan noticed the vet held a carefully folded but ragged old flag. The man reportedly then turned to Cohan and said, She's a grand old rag. Cohan thought it was a great line and originally named his tune You're a Grand Old Rag. So many groups and individuals objected to calling the flag a rag, however, that he gave 'em what they wanted and switched words, renaming the song You're a Grand Old Flag.

The Gambler is a song written by Don Schlitz and recorded by several artists, most famously by American country singer Kenny Rogers. Schlitz wrote the song in 1976 when he was 23 years old. It took two years of shopping the song around Nashville before Bobby Bare recorded it on his album Bare at the urging of Shel Silverstein. Bare's version did not catch on and was never released as a single, so Schlitz recorded it himself, but that version failed to chart higher than No. 65. Other musicians took notice and recorded the song in 1978, including Johnny Cash, who put it on his album Gone Girl. It was Rogers, however, who made the song a mainstream success. His version was a No. 1 country hit, and made its way to the pop charts at a time when country songs rarely crossed over.
