Many of the arrangements that are out there don’t have same notes as the original, and therefore some of the cleverness and simplicity of the original gets lost.This arrangement uses the same shapes as the original, and there’s guitar and tablature as well guitar notation only so that you can easily see that almost all the measures in the music have the same right hand fingering, despite the mix of open and stopped strings making the score look much more complex than it actually is!The original key makes for undue complexity in the clarinet part, so I have arranged the piece to be played by the guitar with a Capo on fret one, so that all the clever shapes can be retained, and the piece moved from 5 sharps in the Clarinet to no sharps. In both the score and the tablature the fingering and positions are marked relative to the Capo, so fret 5 means 5 frets up from the Capo (actually fret 6 on the guitar).I’ve produced two clarinet parts - one sits almost entirely in the chalumeau register, and one sits almost entirely in the clarion register. The span of the piece means there always has to be places where the clarinettist is crossing the break but these are few and far between, making the piece accessible to players from early intermediate upwards.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.576904). Instrumental arrangement of my classical-folk crossover setting of Prévert's poem Pour faire le portrait d'un oiseau (To paint the portrait of a bird). Prévert indicates that you can never capture the real essence of a bird. You can paint a cage, a tree branch for it to sing on, but you have to wait for the actual bird itself to enter your painting - only then can you sign your painting, using a feather from that bird. The music has a Dorian feel - ie with a minor third and seventh but often with a raised sixth - (in this case F#s in an otherwise A minor context). I have provided full score and separate parts and also the melody instrument part with chord names, to enable the guitarist to read along with the melody instrument player and opt for interpretations other than the notated version (eg strumming, rasgueado etc). This is part of a project composed for a group based on the Old Kent Road in London.They provided some lyrics which I set to music for them (around 1982), but the project never took off.I never met the person to whom the letter was addressed (called Howard Nicholls apparently...)but I got the impression that he did exist and meant a great deal to the group.The words (now lost) certainly brought out a romantic theme within the project.I decided recently that this particular theme would work nicely for a simple clarinet and guitar combinationIt is performed here byBalázs Rumy clarinetAndrás Csáki guitar.

Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt (known in English as Only the lonely heart or Only the lonely know) - the original song, by Tchaikovsky, was a setting of the poem by Goethe (one of the songs of Mignon in his novel Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre). It is one of Tchaikovsky's most yearning melodies. I have transcribed the piano part into a relatively simple guitar version.
