I was originally going to call this tune Mellow Spring but it turns out that that's a childcare company (creche) somewhere in the USA! Oh well, maybe Laid back Bounce works better as a title.It is a laid back tune, with several variations accompanied by bluesy chords and a bouncy rhythm, which nevertheless keeps to 4/4 throughout. The key modulates occasionally from an E minor/major centre to a G major centre.It is performed here byBalázs Rumy clarinet and András Csáki guitar.

This well known song - sometimes attributed to Dan Emmet (and his Virginia Minstrels) - has appeared with various lyrics, some less innocent than others. It is now usually played in all innocence by people of all ages and races, simply because the melody is so catchy. This set of variations includes a section in the minor mode (with the 6th and 7th varying from major to minor in the guitar), and a quirky section in 7 time in the dominant key. This was originally a song, which I wrote back in my tender years (also available on this site for alto and guitar), but it also works equally well as an instrumental piece. I have therefore also provided versions on this site for guitar with: flute alto saxophone French horn English horn (cor anglais) clarinet oboe violin. After a gentle introductory major chord arpeggio, the tension of the piece comes into play from the third bar where the melody line holds and repeats an augmented 4th suspension above the guitar. This note then returns as the arpeggio chords change underneath to reveal it as a minor third of a chord related by three degrees of separation from the original - C major to E flat minor. The harmonies and melody continue to sway in their relations in a curious and yet logical progression. I have provided score and parts and also a separate version of the guitar part which provides chord names and fretboard symbols; this would make it useful for educational purposes. The sound sample is an electronic preview.

Many of the arrangements that are out there don’t have same notes as the original, and therefore some of the cleverness and simplicity of the original gets lost.This arrangement uses the same shapes as the original, and there’s guitar and tablature as well guitar notation only so that you can easily see that almost all the measures in the music have the same right hand fingering, despite the mix of open and stopped strings making the score look much more complex than it actually is!The original key makes for undue complexity in the clarinet part, so I have arranged the piece to be played by the guitar with a Capo on fret one, so that all the clever shapes can be retained, and the piece moved from 5 sharps in the Clarinet to no sharps. In both the score and the tablature the fingering and positions are marked relative to the Capo, so fret 5 means 5 frets up from the Capo (actually fret 6 on the guitar).I’ve produced two clarinet parts - one sits almost entirely in the chalumeau register, and one sits almost entirely in the clarion register. The span of the piece means there always has to be places where the clarinettist is crossing the break but these are few and far between, making the piece accessible to players from early intermediate upwards.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!
