It’s Been a Long Long Time is best known to modern audiences as the song at the end Avengers: Endgame, where Steve Rogers, after seventy years, finally gets to dance with Peggy Carter. The song of course, is much older. Two versions of It’s Been a Long Long Time topped the charts in late 1945, and as US servicemen returned from Europe and the Pacific, it perfectly caught the mood of the times. One version was by Bing Crosby, and the other by the Harry James Orchestra featuring Kitty Kallen on vocals. It is the latter version that is heard in Endgame and the one that forms the basis of this arrangement.Musicians at an intermediate standard will find It’s Been a Long Long Time ideal for formal and informal concert performances. with both parts enjoying plenty of melodic interest. It was chiefly written and sung by John Lennon, who claimed it was his first serious attempt at personal song-writing. The song features a baroque style piano solo by George Martin. The tempo was too fast for him to perform it, so he played it at half tempo and layer doubled the tape speed. The resulting tinny sound gave rise to a host of copycat harpsichord solos on contemporary pop songs.This version of In My Life is arranged as a duet for one Oboe and one Bassoon. Musicians at an intermediate level will find In My Life ideal for formal and informal concert performance. Most of the duet is straightforward though the transcribed piano solo is difficult for both players; these eight bars can be skipped without affecting the overall structure of the song. This version of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is arranged by David McKeown as a duet for one Oboe and one Bassoon. The song, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, was written in 1949 by Johhny Marks. The Rudolph story was written by Marks’ brother-in-law, Robert L May, a decade earlier. The success of the song was guaranteed when it was recorded by Gene Autry, a huge star at the time. Initially Gene Autry didn’t like the song and was only persuaded to record it by his wife. She obviously knew best as Rudolph went on to become the second best-selling Christmas record of all time after White Christmas, with versions by everyone from the Jackson Five to Alvin and the Chipmunks. This duet version of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is based on the Gene Autry version, with a short introduction, and three choruses of the melody, with a key change and varied accompaniment throughout. Rhythms are simple in a swing style and the range is conservative, so this arrangement is ideal for players at an intermediate level. Robert Schumann (1810 – 1856) was an influential German music critic and composer who was troubled by mental health issues for much of his life. Schumann’s enthusiasm for music was evident at an early age but he was discouraged from pursuing this as a career and encouraged towards the law instead. Ultimately, music won out and Schumann began studying piano with Friedrich Wieck, whose daughter Clara was later to become Schumann’s wife. After damage to one hand affected his playing ability, Schumann turned his attention to musicology and composition. Träumerei (Dreaming) has been described as one of the most famous piano works ever written. It is one of a collection of short pieces, entitled Kinderscenen (Scenes from Childhood) written in 1838. One of the songs in that book was titled Nordisches Lied, which is usually translated as Northern Song, or I use the alternate translation of Norse Song. The original was Romantic Folk style with thick chords which I have simplified and arranged into ornamented 2-part Baroque style. Besides giving the symbols I have written out my suggested ornaments in cue notes. Continuing in Baroque style I used terraced dynamics on each alternate line and further denote them as delicately or boldly. The ornamentation is all in the upper melody; the lower part is a fun contrapuntal walking bass line of entirely quarter notes (crotchets). I have arranged it into ABBA form.
