His compositions set the standard for polyphonic music and are considered a high point in the history of music. His influence can be seen in the works of many later composers, including Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonio Vivaldi, and George Frideric Handel.Josquin des Prez was a prolific composer of chamber music and duets during the Renaissance period. The song was written on a hot summer day in 1945 by Mel Torme and Bob Wells who were trying to cool down by composing a wintry lyric. It was first recorded by Nat King Cole the following year and was an instant hit. Nat King Cole revisited the song several times in his career and it has also been recorded by just about every noteworthy popular artist since, from Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Peggy Lee, Doris Day, Ella Fitzgerald, Paul McCartney to The Jacksons, and many more. This version is arranged as a duet for one Oboe and one Bassoon. Musicians at an intermediate standard will find this ideal for formal and informal concert performances, with both parts enjoying melodic interest. Total performance time is around four minutes. Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to approach expressive playing. Joplin lived for a while in Sedalia, Missouri and the Maple Leaf Club in that town is thought to have provided the name for this composition. It provided Joplin with a steady income for the rest of his life, and while he requested that it be played at his funeral, his wife refused as she felt it inappropriate. It was the first track on Joshua Rifkin’s famous 1970 revival recording of Joplin’s music and, never waning in popularity, it has featured in hundreds of films. This duet version for one Oboe and one Bassoon includes all four sections of the original composition.
