In this creative treatment, Steve Ash explores some interesting jazz-inspired harmony against this familiar melody without disrespecting it at any point, which leaves us with a satisfying short ballad for trombones. While the melody is given as a showcase for a solid, melodic lead trombonist who is comfortable in the high register (high B-flat at the top end), the remaining parts are utilized for gently moving harmonic lines making this an accessible chart for ensembles with a broad range of skill levels and a fine exercise in ensemble blend and balance. This tender arrangement would be well-suited for an offertory or another short ballad on your trombone ensemble program.

The trombones can walk out in front of the concert band to perform, while your other band members rest their chops...it breaks things up nicely.This can also be done as a quartet, without the solo part. I encourage you to feature soloist(s) however, when possible.You can assign more than one to a part on everything except the improvised jazz solo segments with chord changes. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792547). Ave Maria was composed in 1964 and is one of the most beautiful works for choral ensemble from the 20th century. It was written for a local German fireman's choir by one of his parish's singers who's profession was as a firefighter. The work languished for years but was discovered by a touring American choir who brought it back to the USA and recorded it. It became an instant hit. The music has a heavenly feel to it and one is uplifted by its sheer beauty. This 7-minute arrangement by Robert Kalwas is for 8-part Trombone ensemble and of moderate difficulty. All parts are in bass clef and the ranges are not extreme at all. Ave Maria is featured on YouTube® as a Virtual Choir International Multitrack for a Children's Charity in South Africa. Cherry Classics is pleased to have approval for this arrangement from the estate of Franz Biebl.

Louisiana Fairy Tale (or Louisiana Fairytale) is a song written in 1935 by Haven Gillespie, with lyrics by Mitchell Parish and J. Fred Coots, and was originally popularized by Fats Waller. Waller's version opens with him playing a four-bar solo piano lead-in to a clarinet melody backed by drums, guitar, clarinet, trumpet and piano. The Thirteen Canons, Op. 113 are a collection of works for female unaccompanied chorus composed over the course of a number of years (most likely written while employed as director of a Hamburg woman's choir) and finished off and first published in 1891. Brahms alludes to his admired predecessor Schubert in No. 13 with a quote from the song Der Leiermann from Die Winterreise. Ralph Sauer has lovingly arranged these for six-part Trombone Ensemble of moderate difficulty, able to be performed by just about any level group with the all parts in bass clef and in easy ranges. They can all be performed without the need of a bass trombone or f-attachment.

This selection, Carol of the Bells, also known as Ring, Christmas Bells, is suitable for high school and college students and is perfect for Christmas concerts and church services. Carol of the Bells' was written by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych in 1914 with lyrics by Peter J. Wilhousky. The song is based on the Ukrainian folk chant Shchedryk, a New Year's song, known in English as The Little Swallow, and utilizes a four-note ostinato which brings to mind the ringing of bells. Originally intended to be sung a capella by a mixed four-part choir it has since been recorded into over 150 versions and re-arrangements for various vocal and instrumental compositions. One version, Ring, Christmas Bells, an English-language variant with Nativity-based lyrics, was written by Minna Louise Hohman in 1947. Regis Bookshar has now arranged the music for a Trombone Octet. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (21 pages). In addition to this version for 8 Trombones, many other arrangements of this selection are also available for a variety of instrumental ensembles, including Quintets, Sextets, Septets and Octets, as well as numerous other selections in a wide variety of styles.
