The PaleoBones is a group of trombonists from northern California led by Jeff Reynolds who gather for special occasions to play glorious sounding works for Trombone Choir.The Fanfare is about 3 minutes in length. Mr. Reynolds explores several creative ideas including syncopations of rhythms, whole tone scale patterns, and the infamous Dies Irae chant theme, adding up to an exciting and interesting work to perform and listen to. The work is appropriate for advanced performers.The instrumentation features 5 tenors, 2 basses and 1 contrabass trombone.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.1408435). Symphony No. 5 by Anton Bruckner was written in 1875-76 and given the name of Fantastic by the composer himself, although never added to the score. Unfortunately, Bruckner never heard a live performance by orchestra of this glorious work.Randall Malmstrom has arranged extracts of the Adagio movement for a 5-part Trombone Ensemble including alto on the top part and a contrabass on the bottom part, giving it a very wide and luscious sonority.The 5 1/2 minute arrangement is appropriate for advanced performers.

BIG RIFF is a new work by John Frith for 8-part Trombone Ensemble. It was written as the opening Anthem for Trombonanza 2017, which is a festival takes place annually in the town of Santa Fe, Argentina. Mr. Frith was commissioned to compose this work to open the Festival. The music is about 5 minutes in length and features strong Latin rhythms throughout. The work builds and builds as it adds layers of complexities including a jazz solo for one of the players. The all the middle parts are playable by intermediate performers. Part 1 can be performed on alto or tenor and goes up to high f's. Part 8 is quite low. The work ends in a big climax after building up throughout. Very fun work to perform with a massed group.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792113). A beautiful vocal work of about 2 1/2 to 3 minutes in length transcribed for 8-part antiphonal trombone choir by Ralph Sauer, L.A. Philharmonic Principal Trombone. Handl's Pater Noster is not too difficult and would be appropriate for almost any level group including high school level. The range is conservative with an occasional high B-flat. Jacob Handl was an Austrian composer of Slovene descent, born in Ljubljana. Choirmaster to the Bishop of Olmutz 1579-1585, he lived thereafter in Prague as an organist.

Early versions used the word f’it for fought. The words harken to the biblical story of the Battle of Jericho, where Joshua led the Israelites to victory against Canaanite armies. Put into perspective, Joshua’s battle is really against slavery and the desire for freedom, like the themes of so many other spirituals from that era. This rousing arrangement in swing-style for 8-part Trombone ensemble by James Markey is about two minutes in length, featuring the 1st and 8th parts and is for advanced performers. The mp3 sound clip is taken from Mr. Markey’s solo Bass Trombone album, on base, and includes star performers including Joseph Alessi, David Finlayson and Lisa Albrecht

This selection, Carol of the Bells, also known as Ring, Christmas Bells, is suitable for high school and college students and is perfect for Christmas concerts and church services. Carol of the Bells' was written by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych in 1914 with lyrics by Peter J. Wilhousky. The song is based on the Ukrainian folk chant Shchedryk, a New Year's song, known in English as The Little Swallow, and utilizes a four-note ostinato which brings to mind the ringing of bells. Originally intended to be sung a capella by a mixed four-part choir it has since been recorded into over 150 versions and re-arrangements for various vocal and instrumental compositions. One version, Ring, Christmas Bells, an English-language variant with Nativity-based lyrics, was written by Minna Louise Hohman in 1947. Regis Bookshar has now arranged the music for a Trombone Octet. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (21 pages). In addition to this version for 8 Trombones, many other arrangements of this selection are also available for a variety of instrumental ensembles, including Quintets, Sextets, Septets and Octets, as well as numerous other selections in a wide variety of styles. Way of the Blade, a Presto movement with lots of glisses that runs headlong into a quote from the Tommy Dorsey signature melody. 2. Book Learnin' a sarcastic rant on the rigidity of school homework. 3. Courting Disaster a great joke told by the narrator over a rhythmic bass line. 4. Disco featuring the Tuba Mirum solo over a groovin' Disco line. All the above is just fun and games tongue firmly planted in cheek including a final gasp quoting Ravel's Bolero.
