The Thirteen Canons, Op. 113 are a collection of works for female unaccompanied chorus composed over the course of a number of years (most likely written while employed as director of a Hamburg woman's choir) and finished off and first published in 1891. Brahms alludes to his admired predecessor Schubert in No. 13 with a quote from the song Der Leiermann from Die Winterreise. Ralph Sauer has lovingly arranged these for six-part Trombone Ensemble of moderate difficulty, able to be performed by just about any level group with the all parts in bass clef and in easy ranges. They can all be performed without the need of a bass trombone or f-attachment.

This selection, Johann Pachelbel's celebrated Canon, is perhaps the most famous canon ever written and has been one of my favorite compositions to arrange. A canon is a polyphonic device in which several voices play the same music, entering in sequence. Pachelbel's Canon, was originally written in the key of D Major and was scored for three violins arranged in canon, accompanied by a basso continuo which repeats the same harmonic progression throughout the entire piece. Way of the Blade, a Presto movement with lots of glisses that runs headlong into a quote from the Tommy Dorsey signature melody. 2. Book Learnin' a sarcastic rant on the rigidity of school homework. 3. Courting Disaster a great joke told by the narrator over a rhythmic bass line. 4. Disco featuring the Tuba Mirum solo over a groovin' Disco line. All the above is just fun and games tongue firmly planted in cheek including a final gasp quoting Ravel's Bolero.

The trombones can walk out in front of the concert band to perform, while your other band members rest their chops...it breaks things up nicely.This can also be done as a quartet, without the solo part. I encourage you to feature soloist(s) however, when possible.You can assign more than one to a part on everything except the improvised jazz solo segments with chord changes. Wagner began writing the opera Parsifal in 1857 but didn't complete it until 1882. It's first performance was given at Bayreuth just 4 months before his death. It is loosely based on a 13th-century epic poem of King Arthur and his quest for the Holy Grail.
Randall Malmstrom's beautiful arrangement of the music for 8-part Trombone Ensemble is noble and spiritual.
This 4-minute excerpt contains much of the Introduction or Vorspiel and is appropriate for advanced performers.
