Published by Grant Horsley (A0.1427858). A Hunky punk is a grotesque carving on the side of a building, typically found on Mid/ Late medieval churches in the UK. They are plentiful in Somerset in the West Country of England Though similar in appearance to a gargoyle, a hunky punk is purely decorative and has no other functional purpose whatsoever!! Unlike the gargoyle, which serves to drain water off the roof through its mouth. The theory behind hunky punks and grotesques in general, was that churches were designed to reflect the balance between good and evil, reminding worshippers of the narrow path leading through life. As a result, for every saint or animal that was intended to signify purity and ‘goodness’, there was also an ugly creature to signify evil and ‘badness’.Scored for six C Flutes, this piece is in concert D minor and begins with a medieval type of fanfare which occurs throughout. What follows is a haunting theme with lots of flattened 5ths and several discords to represent the uncomfortable nature of this statue. The staccato and accent direction in most of the piece gives the impression of walking on eggshells not knowing what lies around the corner! Then a brief legato section of the fanfare appears to provide a calmer atmosphere before eventually returning to the main theme and big ending. Set at intermediate level but on the youtube link there is the full score for you to assess suitability. It is nearly 5 mins in length and would be a great addition to a repertoire.Price is for full score and all parts.

Published by Adrian Dee (A0.1037658). Here is one for the big flutes. Arranged for 3 C-flutes, 2 alto flutes, 2 bass flutes, and 2 contrabass flutes. Each voice is unique, so all parts are required, including both contra parts. You may add piccolo players (one on each part) to double the first and second flute parts. This piece is a typical example of Gabrieli’s masterful counterpoint. Keep all notes cleanly separated as though they were marked staccato, especially repeated notes. Bring out the moving notes and drop back on longer notes.

The contrabass flute part is essential, but can be covered by regular bass flute if you don’t have a contra. Put as many players on the bottom parts as you have big flutes available. Don’t take the dotted rhythm literally; it should be triplets (quarter + eighth), or “swing†eighth notes. And most importantly – let your players have fun with this! Scored for piccolo, 2 C-flutes, alto flute, bass flute, and contrabass flute.

The song has been an international hit. This arrangement is just so that people who love the song can play it.  I will admit that it is repetitious, but it's just a catchy tune! Scored for flute choir - 3 C, alto, bass, and contrabass flutes. If your choir doesn't have a contrabass, then it can be substituted by another bass, or any C instrument in a similar range, but it is a part that needs to be covered, as it has important (but quite simple bass lines).  There is an optional upright string bass part that doubles the contrabass an octave below.   There are 2 body percussion parts that are quite simple, but particularly important.  It's a stomp and clap (or snap).  You could also use 2 different drums, buckets, etc.  Substitute a low pitch for the stomp and a higher one for the clap. Duration: 3 minutes.

Alan Silvestri is one of my favorite movie composers. He composes mainly for the film industry, and wrote fantastic scores for movies like Forrest Gump, Back to the Future, and Night at the Museum, to name a few.
This piece comes from the movie, Cast Away. The movie didn't have much music in it, which was intended to create a feeling of isolation. Needless to say, when music was played during a scene, it made a big impact. Silvestri won a Grammy Award for his music score in this movie.
This arrangement of the theme song is written for 2 altos, 3 basses, contra-alto in G, and contrabass flutes. The Bass 3 part is optional if you have a contra-alto in G. The optional cello part is to provide extra support to the contrabass, if needed.
This piece is very soothing and meditative. I hope your choir and your audience will enjoy it.
