Gustav Holst - Folksongs of Hampshire England . In the early 1900's there was great interest in collecting and preserving the folk songs of England, Scotland, and Ireland. Equipped with their newly invented recording devices, people such as Cecil Sharp, Charles Stanford, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Gustav Holst would travel into the country-side to record, or notate songs being sung. They would frequently use these songs in their own compositions. Holst's music in particular is filled with those songs and his two suites for band are especially valued by wind bands around the world. This group of four songs was arranged for voice and piano by Holst and set for flute choir by John Gibson. The songs are 1. Young Edwin in the Lowlands Low 2. Bedlam City 3. The Irish Girl 4. Young Reilly. The instrumentation is: Piccolo, Flute 1-3, Alto Flute, Bass Flute, and Contra Bass Flute.

3 Irish Folksongs arranged by Charles Villiers Stanford and set for flute quintet by John Gibson. Charles Stanford arranged many folksongs that he and others collected. This set comes from his "Songs of Erin" (1901) and is set for 4 C Flutes and 1 Alto Flute with an alternate 5th C part provided. The tunes are : The Killarney Hunt, Now Mary What's the Matter, and Reynard on the Mountain High.

One of America?s best loved songs began asa sea shanty. The Shenandoah spoken ofin the song is not about a place, but is about an Indian chief living along theMissouri River.

This arrangementopens with a haunting Flute 1 and Alto Flute duet. The instruments are featuredin various combinations throughout the piece to explore the different of colorsproduced by the flute choir. Harmoniesand rhythms are altered during various sections--most notably a duet betweenthe bass flute and alto flute. Piccolo,alto and bass flutes play prominent roles.

2017 Holiday Contest Entry


This arrangement of five traditional Israeli folk songs and Jewish holiday music will put you in the mood to celebrate! The first flutes are featured prominently in this arrangement. Each part takes a turn carrying the tune, with rich harmonies and driving rhythms enhancing the melodies. The medley begins exuberantly in the key of concert d minor, moves joyfully to the relative F Major, then finishes boisterously back in d minor. I have included a version of the alto flute part transposed for C flute in case you don't have an alto flute available.

The Mischievous elves is scored for 6 flutes- 4 C Flutes -Alto and Bass Flute. It is a 3 minute piece of intermediate level, although some parts are in the early intermediate range-the whole score and parts is on the youtube link for you to assess.
Written in concert D minor with the range of around 2 octaves- Flute 1 has top G once. It is intended as a concert piece and a bit of fun as well as hopefully something different.
It would work well for concerts, recitals, productions as well as for Christmas, Halloween and Fantasy themes and concepts

Flute Quintet - Intermediate - Digital Download. This selection, "Carol of the Bells", also known as "Ring, Christmas Bells", is suitable for high school and college students and is perfect for Christmas concerts and church services. "Carol of the Bells' was written by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych in 1914 with lyrics by Peter J. Wilhousky. The song is based on the Ukrainian folk chant "Shchedryk", a New Year's song, known in English as "The Little Swallow", and utilizes a four-note ostinato which brings to mind the ringing of bells. Originally intended to be sung a capella by a mixed four-part choir it has since been recorded into over 150 versions and re-arrangements for various vocal and instrumental compositions. One version, "Ring, Christmas Bells", an English-language variant with Nativity-based lyrics, was written by Minna Louise Hohman in 1947. Regis Bookshar has now arranged the music for a Flute Quintet. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (16 pages). In addition to this version for 5 Flutes, many other arrangements of this selection are also available for a variety of instrumental ensembles, including Quintets, Sextets, Septets and Octets, as well as numerous other selections in a wide variety of styles. I would encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar. You may find something else which might interest you as well. I'm certain that this exciting arrangement will entertain both performers and audiences alike for years to come.

Of all the Irish folk tunes, Danny Boy is the most well-known of them all. This arrangement is based on the adaptation of the tune sung by the King's Singers by Peter Knight and Philip Lawson.

This is a straight forward arrangement of Danny Boy that has beautiful harmonies and is rhythmically simplistic. This is a great closer for your recitals.

Scored for 3 altos, 3 basses and contrabass flutes. There are optional contra-alto in G and cello parts that double the Bass 3 & Contrabass parts.

California Dreamin' isa classic song from the mid 1960s folk-rock era written by John Phillips and Michelle Phillips and was firstrecorded by Barry McGuire. However, the best known version is by The Mamas & the Papas, who sang backup on theoriginal version and released as a single in 1965. Thelyrics of the song express the narrator's longing for the warmth of Los Angeles during a cold winterin New York City. It was certifiedas a Gold Record (single) by the RIAA in June 1966 and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. This arrangement is for SSSSAB or SSSSSB Flute Ensemble. This is a fairly simple version of a classic Christmas song. For younger flautists, this arrangement would be a good tool for learning dissonance, as the parts have been arranged to mimic the sound of actual jingle bells. Part 5 could also be played by a bass flute for a different sound. Eleven pages (score and parts included), approximately two and a half minutes performance time.
