Avatar: The Way of Water, is the long-awaited sequel to the award-winning film from 2009.  The soundtrack for the new film was written by Simon Franglen, who originally wrote 5 hours of music to cover any and all situations in the almost 3-hour movie.The Songcord is a beautiful song that is heard twice in the film – at the beginning and at the end.  A songcord is a mnemonic device used by the Na’vi that assists them in storytelling.  In this song, Neytiri is thanking Eywa – the Great Mother - for her family.This arrangement is scored for flute choir – piccolo with 4 C, alto, bass, and contrabass flutes.  There is an optional cello part that doubles the contrabass that can be played by any bass clef C instrument in a similar range.One of the most important parts of this piece is what helps create the mood, which is where the part called “Shimmer†comes in.  In an interview, Simon Franglen said that an important part of the music is the feeling of light, and he achieved that by including shimmering sounds into his tunes.  The “Shimmer†part can be played by hanging a few keys (house keys, car keys, etc.) that have different pitches on short lengths of string.  Use a small metal or wooden object to lightly hit the keys to create little “dingsâ€. You can also use wind chimes, a little xylophone, bells, etc.  The idea is to create a magical mood without overpowering the music.  Play this part wherever there is a note in the measure. Always keep the melody prominent.  The piccolo should always be played softly - at the equivalent volume of the group’s piano.  Play this slowly and freely, with a lot of rubato.  Duration: 3.75 minutes.

Adrian Dee #6587987. Published by Adrian Dee (A0.817947). Magpie was premiered at La Scala opera house in Milan, Italy on May 31, 1817 and was an immediate success. The overture has become a staple of the orchestral repertoire, as have many Rosssini overtures. In this arrangement, I have omitted the famous snare drum roll at the beginning, opting instead to stick with just the flute choir instruments. I also simplified the opening rhythmic figure in the interest of ease of consistency across the ensemble. Much of the orchestral piccolo part, often seen in auditions, is preserved in the piccolo part here and I have kept the piece in its original keys. This is a rather long piece (about 22 minutes) - but quite amenable to breaking it up any number of ways (by month, quarter, etc). I wrote this over the course of the Covid shutdown, when we were pretty much housebound for long periods. It's divided into 12 sections, one for each month, beginning in March 2020 - when we here in Canada first found out about the approaching pandemic. I tried to represent each month as it affected me - some sadder, some a bit more optimistic. I especially like December - mostly sad, with a brief reprieve for Christmas, then back to sad. In this neck of the woods, Christmas was all but cancelled as we were pretty much in lockdown; at the last minute, restrictions were eased to allow small gatherings for the Holiday. Overall, it was a sad, lonely year - especially for musicians! Whatever your personal stance on the pandemic, it certainly affected us all - and resulted in the loss of many lives.

The Jester was a member of the household of a nobleman or a monarch employed to entertain guests during royal court. Jesters were also traveling performers who entertained common folk at fairs and town markets, and the discipline continues into the modern day, where jesters perform at historical-themed events. This piece is in ternary form.The outer sections are to represent the general clowning around and playing pranks as a mischievous Jester does. The middle section by contrast is more lyrical to demonstrate a softer side to the personality, however this quickly transcends back to the final section where jokes, pranks and laughs have their way!It should be performed very briskly and lightly to capture the overall feel of the piece. The range in total is two and a half octaves and it is 4.00 minutes in length- Set at Intermediate level, but lots of areas are less so.
