Hayu Leilot (There were nights) was written by Mordecai Zeira in 1938 to a poem by Yaakov Orland. Though this song is little known outside of Israel today, it is one of my favorites, and I hope will become one of yours as well.I hope you enjoy playing this as much as I enjoyed writing it. Published by Adrian Dee (A0.817938). We are on the vast grasslands in Central Asia. In the distance we hear a caravan approaching. They are guided by Russian soldiers singing a folk song. As they get closer, we hear a melancholy native melody also emerge. The caravan passes, the voices of the men, the plodding of the horses and camels, the bundles of goods on their way to a foreign market. All intermingled into one song now. We watch them slowly fade into the distance until all we can discern is a faint rise of dust on the horizon and the fading notes of the folk song.

This original work creatively weaves the beloved Amazing Grace melody in and out of a second original tune titled In the Forest, evoking a meditative and melancholy sense of wandering and reflection, as if hidden from the outside world. This composition, originally for string quartet, was composed in 2011 at the request of Danielle Rosaria Cummins and the organization Alternate Avenues.Â In 2023, Wallin Huff got the opportunity to rework this piece for a flute choir, enabling the sweeping lines to be fleshed out with the gentle tones of 8 flutes.
