Pensamientos anudados (Knotted Thoughts) Possibly we have all had the experience of not being able to get rid of thoughts that are tied to each other, produce a mental 'short circuit' and hinder the flow, preventing us from taking off. The title comes from a poem by (my literature teacher) Javier Adúriz: One after another the days are drawn, / they fall in love, they lift / the fixed knot of your thoughts. (Uno tras otro se dibujan los dÃas, / se enamoran, levantan / el nudo fijo de tus pensamientos) Musically speaking, here is a melody that moves slowly on a constant and relatively static background. This melody reappears, always desolate, with minimal variations. Pensamientos anudados was composed in Bremen (Germany) in December 2020. This piece was inspired by Chopin's pieces 'Nocturne in C# Minor' and Prelude Op. 28, No. 4. The solemn, singing melody in the right hand is meant to be played as marked, 'cantabile'. This, along with the left hand's slow moving arpeggios with some consonant and dissonant parts creates a reflective, peaceful mood.Whilst writing this piece I wanted to focus on writing a piece in binary form, as the second half of the piece shows. I still tried to keep the melodic melody in the right hand, but the left hand changes to a waltz-like accompaniment. If I were to write this piece again, I may have explored the first part for much longer and made a nice transition into the second part.As for now, this is my last piece which I composed at an earlier time. I am now going to start working on some new fresh pieces, focusing on certain aspects of music. Thanks again, Damien.

This piece was actually the first piece I wrote for this album, I wrote it initially without even thinking that I would make an album out of it. So it has a special place in the album and is quite a simple piece compared to the other tracks. I wrote it during 2021 and then later I had the idea to make a music box album. About halfway through composing the album, I had the idea to create a story about a squirrel so this piece was written well before the title was written but it fits quite well in the story.Now that Whiskers has explored the outside of the house, his curious nature couldn't help but explore this mysterious house that he found. Slowly and carefully he creeps inside to see if he can find anything to eat or a safe place to call home. He creeps around and can’t hear a sound - just the sound of the gentle breeze rustling the leaves outside. Everything is damaged and abandoned. The wallpaper is torn and drooping, the floorboards broken and creaky, and the furniture has seen much better days.As Whiskers continues to look around, his ears are pricked to listen out for anything unusual that might be a threat….

I always enjoy writing something simple but pretty and this piece is exactly that. As with many of my other piano compositions, I enjoy writing them in the style of “soft piano” pieces which you can listen to while you study, work, relax, or anything else. I initially came up with the original motif at the start of the piece which I really liked and expanded it into a full piece. When coming up to the B section I made it too dramatic and it would probably be too distracting for the listener if they were working or studying so I decided to start over with the B section and write something that expanded upon the original motif in a subtle and sweet way.I am quite pleased with the finished composition, it turned out in a way that I was aiming for from the beginning. As for the title, I sat down after I had finished writing the piece and listened to it a few times and brainstormed some names. I eventually settled on the name that it is now: ‘Some Things Don’t Always Last’ which has a bitter-sweet quality to it. I think it fits quite well with the piece as it’s like a lullaby that comes and goes. A distant memory that is recalled because of an old toy you found or because you drove past your childhood home that you grew up in.

The title of this piece came from the use of swing in the rhythm. I wanted to write a piece with swing and that’s how this piece came to be. I wanted the piece to reflect a swing hanging from a tree branch on a summer evening with the sun starting to dip down below the horizon. The piece begins with a simple pattern that follows a chord progression which appears through most of the piece.As you listen to this piece, I want to relax and just imagine a place where you are alone or with someone you love, on that swing in the warmth of that summer evening. The swing is gently swaying back and forth in the breeze and the clouds are starting to set in as the night settles in once again.

This is probably one of my favourite pieces, it really turned out how I wanted it to. The opening bars at the beginning of the piece introduce us to the style of the piece and provide short fragments of the motifs that are to come later in the piece. In bar 9, the main theme of the piece is introduced which is a arpeggiated open-voiced chord starting in the left hand followed by the right hand. That ope-voiced chord is one of my favourite chord voicings as it just has a beautiful airy sound and that’s what I wanted the focus of this piece to be.I wanted to change things up in the middle section as you can hear with the left that takes the melody and the right plays a chordal accompaniment. This is actually a little homage to a piece I learnt on the piano when I was younger, there was a section similar to this that I really liked the style and writing of so I decided to use it in this piece. One last thing, this piece was originally called ‘Cloudy Day’ and it was a standalone piece but I changed the name when I added it to this album to keep it one word like the other pieces.

Repose means to be in a state of restfulness or tranquillity. As with most of the pieces in this album, it is meant to be calm and peaceful - something you could listen to when you want to relax and unwind. This piece is definitely a lot more chordal than melodic, although there are some melodies that come in in the second half of the piece.It’s funny, when I write these program notes I am listening back to the piece I have written and I am able to see the full picture as I am able to stand back and look at it as a whole piece. I think the last 7 bars with the quaint melody quite high on the piano is where the piece finally found where it needed to go. Everything else before it is just noise. Then as soon as that melody comes it only lasts for a very short time and then the piece ends. Maybe that is a reflection of the time we take to rest or go on a holiday. We take a lot of time to get into ‘relaxation mode’ and then by the time we are fully relaxed and disconnected, we need to get back to reality or whatever we were doing before.

In 'Afternoon,' I strive to encapsulate the laid-back ambiance of a lazy afternoon while maintaining a sense of continual movement throughout the piece. The harmonies and chords gracefully ebb and flow, mirroring the relaxed yet ever-changing nature of the afternoon. Opening with a gentle Oom-pah rhythm in the left hand, the melody unfolds leisurely above, creating a serene atmosphere. Harmonically, I utilise cyclical progressions, adding to the music's fluidity and sense of perpetual motion.Structurally, the composition unfolds gradually, beginning with a peaceful introduction that sets the tone for the rest of the piece. As the melody evolves slowly over time, listeners are invited to immerse themselves in the tranquil scene, savouring each moment of the afternoon's tranquillity.

The second last piece of this album ‘Sunset’ is a depiction of the sun setting after a relaxed Sunday. The piece open with long-sustained chords in both hand which are reflective of the beauty, calmness, and peacefulness of the sun sitting among the landscape in the distance. This is emphasised by the slow tempo and the soft dynamics of the composition.As the piece moves away from the sustained chords, the an arpeggiated pattern is introduced in the left hand which adds some rhythm. The melody floats above this accompaniment and is unhurried and gentle. In the final section of ‘Sunset’ the right hand joins the left with it’s flowing arpeggiated motion to continue the calm and peaceful atmosphere.I don’t watch the sunset often so writing this piece allowed me to think about the feelings I have when I sit there and simply appreciate the beauty of this event that happens every day, something that goes largely unnoticed in our busy lives.

In 'Storm', I aim to evoke a complex blend of emotions, juxtaposing the comfort of distance with an underlying sense of nervous anticipation. The piece unfolds with a steady tempo, delicately at first, gradually building to a mezzo forte climax before subsiding once more. Throughout, the rhythm maintains a consistent patter, reminiscent of raindrops, interspersed with sporadic bass notes that mimic distant thunder. Short, arpeggiated figures add texture, evoking the rumbling of an approaching storm.Structurally, I employ a through-composed format, crafting a narrative arc that follows the ebb and flow of the storm's intensity. Central to this structure is a broken chord motif, initially presented as quavers and later evolving into semiquavers. This piece was the first piece that I came up with for this album and it prompted me to write the rest of the album in a similar style. The idea for ‘Sunrise’ actually came from a 30 day composition challenge in which you had to write a new idea for a piece every day for 30 days. I think the prompt for this one was a sunrise, hence the name of the piece. I think when I was writing the piece, I imagined watching a colourful sunrise amongst the rolling hills of the countryside which fade into the horizon. This is the only piece with a flute along with the piano which I think works well for this piece as it’s a relatively simple one.

The second last piece of this album ‘Sunset’ is a depiction of the sun setting after a relaxed Sunday. The piece open with long-sustained chords in both hand which are reflective of the beauty, calmness, and peacefulness of the sun sitting among the landscape in the distance. This is emphasised by the slow tempo and the soft dynamics of the composition. As the piece moves away from the sustained chords, the an arpeggiated pattern is introduced in the left hand which adds some rhythm. The melody floats above this accompaniment and is unhurried and gentle. In the final section of ‘Sunset’ the right hand joins the left with it’s flowing arpeggiated motion to continue the calm and peaceful atmosphere.I don’t watch the sunset often so writing this piece allowed me to think about the feelings I have when I sit there and simply appreciate the beauty of this event that happens every day, something that goes largely unnoticed in our busy lives.

In 'Storm', I aim to evoke a complex blend of emotions, juxtaposing the comfort of distance with an underlying sense of nervous anticipation. The piece unfolds with a steady tempo, delicately at first, gradually building to a mezzo forte climax before subsiding once more. Throughout, the rhythm maintains a consistent patter, reminiscent of raindrops, interspersed with sporadic bass notes that mimic distant thunder. Short, arpeggiated figures add texture, evoking the rumbling of an approaching storm. Structurally, I employ a through-composed format, crafting a narrative arc that follows the ebb and flow of the storm's intensity. Central to this structure is a broken chord motif, initially presented as quavers and later evolving into semiquavers. In 'Afternoon,' I strive to encapsulate the laid-back ambiance of a lazy afternoon while maintaining a sense of continual movement throughout the piece. The harmonies and chords gracefully ebb and flow, mirroring the relaxed yet ever-changing nature of the afternoon. Opening with a gentle Oom-pah rhythm in the left hand, the melody unfolds leisurely above, creating a serene atmosphere. Harmonically, I utilise cyclical progressions, adding to the music's fluidity and sense of perpetual motion.Structurally, the composition unfolds gradually, beginning with a peaceful introduction that sets the tone for the rest of the piece. As the melody evolves slowly over time, listeners are invited to immerse themselves in the tranquil scene, savouring each moment of the afternoon's tranquillity.

This is my second piece that I have wrote for piano and in general. The reason I chose the name Yesterday's Future is basically because I wanted to write a piece where it portrays moving on from something happening in you life. If I were to write it again, I would probably change up the melody a bit halfway through to make it more interesting, but nonetheless, I am pretty happy with it.As the theme continues throughout the whole the piece, changing very subtly, it resembles something you need to let go of. At the end of the piece with the held right hand and moving left hand, I wanted to make that part sound like it is moving on with the dynamics changing to resemble anger and relief. Anyway, thanks again for listening, hope you enjoyed it and there is much more to come!
