My goal is to create something that sounds beautiful as a standalone piece of music, but most importantly, that it actually makes pianistic sense. Sometimes I even hide exercises in the arrangements that I want a student to work on. All of my arrangements are usually made for a specific student, so the results will always vary. This arrangement was made for an early intermediate student in level 3 of the Alfred's Masterwork Classics series. She is working on another piece where the RH crosses over quite a bit, so I decided to create a good practice etude-ish version of What Child is This, since we are also preparing for a Christmas Recital. The reprise of the main melody is identical in the RH and LH, except the RH crosses over the LH the entire time. Overall, the piece has a very mysterious feel that really suits the melody and lovely to hear. Be careful if the tempo is slowed down too much because the dissonances might stick out more than preferred, so the LH will have to be played at pp in order to not distract from the pretty melody.I give fingering and pedal suggestions.

About the arrangement(See also (PopJazzKeys.com/The-Bare-Necessities)This is a relatively easy to play solo piano jazz arrangement of THE BAR NECESSITIES. The song is a traditional jazz tune made famous in the Walt Disney movie THE JUNGLE BOOK. The video and audio recording I posted here features me playing the short version of my arrangement. When played as written (with all the repeats) it is almost 4 minutes long.What's cool about this arrangement is that you can easily add a bass player and even an entire rhythm section while playing it the same way as you would in a solo performance!Who this arrangement is best suited forI think everyone who likes the song except perhaps advanced jazz pianists will have fun learning and playing this arrangement. I arranged this piece originally with my younger piano students in mind, who have smaller hands than most adults. That’s why there are no large intervals or big jumps in the left hand. Something generally found in ragtime and early jazz piano styles. This means that my arrangement is perfectly suited for pianists with smaller hands. Of course pianists with large hands (like myself) can play it too (ha-ha!).I think it is also a great piece for pianists who want to familiarize themselves with playing jazz piano. And since I wrote out every note and articulation, they can play along with the recording and hopefully pick up the traditional jazz feel along the way.Although the arrangement is not very difficult, it poses several challenges for the inexperienced pianist, as explained later.How I arranged itAs I already explained above, there are no large intervals or big jumps in the left hand to be found. Instead, I focused more on polyphonic arranging techniques, in both hands. I also used guide tones and inversions.The left hand imitates the accompaniment style of a traditional jazz guitar or banjo player with added half time bass figures that are typically played by a tuba or upright bass an octave lower. Tips for how to learn this arrangementWhen I teach this song to my students I strongly recommend to them to listen to the original version and my recording a lot, rather than explaining to them how swinging eighth notes and jazz articulation work. By the way, there are a few bars where you hear me playing straight eighths on the recording (as indicated in the sheet music). I decided to add articulations so that pianists who have not a lot of experience with playing jazz will find it easier to play it with the appropriate “touchâ€. It's a good idea to check those out.Should you not be familiar with playing polyphonic passages with one hand, you might want to practice very slowly at first and attempt to balance the different voices appropriately. Listening to the recording will also help with discovering dynamic possibilities. I didn’t want to clutter up the sheet music with dynamic markings, so listening to the recording is really the only way to figure out what dynamics I had in mind.

Great for waking interest in that particular piano student and a really fun way to explore the pentatonic scale and 9th chords on the piano. Cross overs abound! I wrote this descriptive piece in particular for a student I was teaching, Elsa S., who ended up performing it on her Spring recital. Julia Muench currently resides on the piano faculty at the Monmouth Conservatory of Music (now under the Count Basie Theatre umbrella) in Red Bank, New Jersey, with a large student class.Her more recent musical activities besides composing, involve extensive piano teaching and giving piano recitals. The past two years, she has spent a good deal of time traveling in and out of the country. Italy and Chile have been among her destinations abroad. She performed a piano concert including her own composition, Nautilus Dances, as part of the Utopia Exhibit ( focusing on German Emigration to the US in the 1830's) in Washington DC's German Museum and at the Missouri history Museum in St. Louis, MO.Her latest piano concert in Red Bank, NJ featured composers Chopin, Debussy and Khatchaturian. Many of her performances may be viewed on youtube under Julia Muench. She has her own musical article blog on Wordpress under musicflower.She is a long time ASCAP member, where she was recently awarded and ASCAP writer's award for 2009/10. Hanon Piano / Keyboard Exercises 1 - 30Condensed and Simplified for Beginners Easy ReadingIn this short book you will find condensed and simplified versions of the Hanon piano finger exercises 1 - 30 as well as the major, harmonic minor and melodic minor scales in every key (two octaves). What is Hanon? The ‘Hanon Virtuoso Pianist’ is a collection of piano finger exercises designed to give equal strength, agility and flexibility to all five fingers of both hands. Written by Charles-Louis Hanon sometime in the 1800s, these exercises without doubt have become one of the most widely used techniques by today’s pianists. In my opinion these are the best finger exercises available. One really great thing about these exercises is that they are applicable to both absolute beginners and advanced players alike, particularly as the reading ability required is minimal. Whatever your ability, these exercises will help improve your technique and finger strength. Having been written well over 100 years ago, the original work is now in the public domain and therefore digital copies can be acquired free of charge on the internet. However, most of these are very poor quality and the instructions are mainly in French or Russian - neither of which work too well for me! For the full version I personally recommend the ‘Alfred’ Edition edited by Allan Small which is clear and has instructions in English. So why do I need this book? The whole point is to make it easy to read and to reduce page turns - less is more! In the full version the first 30 exercises take up fifty pages whereas here there are three exercises per page for the first 20, then two per page for the next 10, reducing the fifty pages to just twelve. I initially produced this for my own use only but figured that others may like to take advantage of what I’ve done. Does this mean that the print is just smaller? No, not at all. If you are familiar with these exercises you will know that they are repeated patterns which ascend and descend for two octaves diatonically. To condense and simplify them and consequently eliminate an enormous amount of page turns I have shown: the all-important fingering on the first pattern (as per the original)then the repeated second patternthen ‘changeover’ patterns between ascending and descending - which are sometimes slightly differentthen finally the last pattern of each exercise which again is often very slightly different. I have also written them two octaves apart (for easy reading) and only shown them for one octave instead of two. In practice they should be played one octave apart and ultimately be practiced for two octaves. Donelaitis poem The Seasons plots and the most famous artist Vytautas Kazimieras Jonynas (1907-1997) woodcut illustrations. These Donelaitis poem The Seasons illustrations have become classics of Lithuanian art. Composer created his paintings of the suite using native Lithuania Minor folk song melodies. Some of them are written almost 200 years ago. Most songs used are from Christian Bartsch prepared and published by Lithuanian folk songs Song of the votes. If you do not doubt that the song’s soul is in the melody, it should also be true, that the song is understood correctly only when we sing or listen to it – so believed Ch. Bartsch. He could not possibly foresee that the songs that sounded at his time will be wiped out in parallel with the East Prussian population. But after all, maybe he did predict? Therefore, he was rescuing them. The ancient epics and worldview associate The Seasons with cyclical idea of time, which is expressed by the view of The Sun’s path in the sky. The main hero of this musical work is The Sun and the diversity of nature, life and work associated with it. In the Eternal Circle we born, age, die - everything repeats, nothing new happens. They are intended as simple, meditative pieces, perhaps good for student pianists to attempt.In spring of 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold, I suffered a massive manic episode followed by a debilitating depression that lasted over a year. During this time I found my relationship with music fraught—I could not compose, and could barely even listen to music for enjoyment, relaxation, or whatever other reasons people listen to music. It was terrifying, thinking my life’s work was over.The shift to being unable to compose or listen, however, was a gradual, like the shift from mania to depression. I found my listening habits following what seemed like a massive ritardando, as they moved away from the upbeat music I was used to toward more and more ambient, very slow music. Hiroshi Yoshimura’s album Music For Nine Postcards was on repeat for a long while before the total break. Its calm repetitions must have influenced what I was doing, because I sometimes found myself at the piano playing the same note or chord over and over again, just listening to the details in the resonance. Out of this came the first of these four pieces, On Nothing.Eight months later I found myself doing it again, the result of which is Four One. Another eight months went by before About Sixths, and then, as my recovery became more and more apparent, only two months passed until On Sol. I am grateful to say I am now composing every day again, though my music has, without conscious intention, taken on a far more introspective feel than ever before.I have not given the pieces numbers, because I don’t mind if they are played in a different order, alone, or—as the title suggests—as interludes between other pieces. I do like the printed order though.

I always enjoy writing something simple but pretty and this piece is exactly that. As with many of my other piano compositions, I enjoy writing them in the style of “soft piano” pieces which you can listen to while you study, work, relax, or anything else. I initially came up with the original motif at the start of the piece which I really liked and expanded it into a full piece. When coming up to the B section I made it too dramatic and it would probably be too distracting for the listener if they were working or studying so I decided to start over with the B section and write something that expanded upon the original motif in a subtle and sweet way.I am quite pleased with the finished composition, it turned out in a way that I was aiming for from the beginning. As for the title, I sat down after I had finished writing the piece and listened to it a few times and brainstormed some names. I eventually settled on the name that it is now: ‘Some Things Don’t Always Last’ which has a bitter-sweet quality to it. I think it fits quite well with the piece as it’s like a lullaby that comes and goes. A distant memory that is recalled because of an old toy you found or because you drove past your childhood home that you grew up in.
