My Prelude on the hymn tune Terra Beata (This Is My Father's World) is intended for church pianists looking for interesting arrangements of hymns familiar to their congregations. It is one of two settings for piano of Terra Beata that I have written. In this setting there are two statements of the melody. The first places the melody in the soprano register with a repeated-note pattern serving as the accompaniment in the left hand. The second places the melody in the bass register moving at half the previous speed and accompanied by a downward moving arpeggiation pattern played by the right hand. The second half of the melody returns to the soprano, harmonized with 4-note chords, and accompanied by rapid downward moving scales played by the left hand. In the final phrase, the pace slows, leading inconclusively to a chord of the 13th on G-flat at mid-phrase, before resuming in the main key of E-flat and ending triumphantly with a repeated-note trumpet-like pattern. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

There I discovered composers like Agustin Lara, Jose Alfredo Jimenez, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Astor Piazzolla. Despite not speaking Spanish fluently, I'm captivated by the language's musicality.This passion inspired me to compose Latin-style songs in the early 1990s, culminating in my album “FOREVER AMOR,” and later recording the music in 2016 for Piano, Violin and Bass. ENCHANTING DARKNESS is a captivating rhumba with a moderate tempo, featuring three distinct themes. The initial theme oscillates between half-step harmonies of F and G-flat, evoking an eerie atmosphere. Transitioning into the second theme of A minor, a sense of suspense permeates the music. Finally, the third theme reverts to the major key of F, exuding a serene and resolved ambiance. Throughout, ENCHANTING DARKNESS employs quarter-note triplets in its melody, set against a steady Latin beat. Like many tracks on the album, it hints at the possibility of narrating a love tale through the evocative use of imaginary Spanish words.The piano sheet music for ENCHANTING DARKNESS is clearly notated, featuring detailed instructions on dynamics, articulation, phrasing, pedal usage, chord symbols, suggested fingerings, and relevant musical terminology.While the mp3 sample includes violin and bass, the sheet music is for solo piano, suitable for intermediate to advanced players and instructors. These sonatas for piano solo explore these deeper meanings in a variety of contemporary musical influences, while keeping in mind the acoustics of small rural churches of the late nineteenth century, with wooden floors and walls, high ceilings, and dimensions determined by local builders who knew how to shape a room for excellent acoustics in an age of no electricity and no microphones. These sonatas are but partly about the specific melodies and words, and mostly about their meaning in spiritual contemplation . . . and the piano, resonating, reverberant, sometimes whispering---as a sacred harp. Although these sonatas have no specific titles, the first sonata may be thought of as the Prayer Sonata, the second as the Travel Sonata, as in a spiritual journey, and the third sonata is about our greatest fear, that of being alone and without God. Performance Note The pianist must keep in mind that these sonatas are about playing the piano as much as playing a composition. Musical effects characteristic of the piano and descriptive of the memory in American culture are the substances of these piano solos. Touch is important: in many places, several dynamics are called for on the same beat. All three pedals on an American piano (damper, sostenuto, and sustain) are needed. The orchestral and cinematic structure of this music requires extensive use of three staffs, which may consist of two treble and one bass staff, or one treble and two bass staffs. A friend of mine, Chad Walker, came to me with the standard sheet music to this piece and asked me to make it harder, fit the hands better, and fill it out. Much to his delight and chagrin, this is the final result.This piece would be perfect for playing in church, especially during Easter or Pentecost. It would also be nice for the last Sunday in Epiphany when many liturgical churches say, Goodbye to the word, Hallelujah.The first verse is relatively simple, with a bassline arpeggio that fits the hand nicely. The chord inversions in the interludes are supposed to represent the angels on Jacob's Ladder. The second verse is a little more full with some ornamentation. The third verse culminates in block chords in the right hand with a bassline that alternates between a heartbeat and running feet.www.thequarternotes.com

It has been recorded by so many great artists but perhaps most famously by 'The Platters'. I have arranged it for piano in the key of F which and then modulated into Ab second time round. It has further key changes within the tune during the bridge. I have reharmonised it significantly to give it a jazz feel. I have given it a semi-quaver/sixteenth note feel rather than a swing beat which I felt suited it as a ballad.Please note it is a piano solo and doesn't include the bass line that is on my YouTube recording. I write all my arrangements as piano solos first so it sounds perfect as such. I don't include pedal markings, fingerings or dynamics and prefer to leave this to the discretion of the individual pianist as you will get no two piano teachers to agree on these issues.It's a wonderful tune and I hope you have as much fun playing my arrangement as I had writing it.

It is the subject of stories from the Chumash, a Native American people who have lived along California’s central coast for thousands of years. When the area experiences extreme drought, sometimes the waterfall reduces to a trickle. But it is a beautiful, shady place with a magical quality, and the water always returns.For interested students or teachers, here are a few pedagogical notes:Pedal ad lib is appropriate for this piece. Unless a player has very large hands, the right hand will need to cover most of the top notes in the bass clef (the C ostinato). This can be a welcome challenge for students, as they will need to balance this with sustaining and shaping the top melody notes. Some of the middle C ostinato notes are indicated as optional, since they are already struck as melody notes during the same beat. (But they are still notated in case another instrument plays the melody.) It might feel awkward to strike some of the other C ostinato notes that are rhythmically nearby, but it can also be a good way to practice leaving that sustained melodic note ringing while striking the same note soon after with a much quieter dynamic, which requires both control and skilled use of the pedal.About the Composer:Emily Nafius is a pianist in Southern California with her musical roots in jazz. Length: 2 pages Notes from Jake: This arrangement of Angels We Have Heard on High is kind of an ode to Brad Mehldau’s many jazz waltz arrangements over the years (for example, She’s Leaving Home, from Day is Done). I wanted to capture the feel of Mehldau’s classic trio waltzes, not just the piano but the drums and bass too. The A sections feature a constantly rising chord progression, with slight differences in chord quality between the first two A’s, and then the B sections highlight some more dramatic reharmonizations as well as a dichotomy between straight-eighths/behind the beat melody and swung accompaniment. The intro, which also serves as the outro vamp as well as an interlude between choruses, includes a bell-like theme that I hope instantly conjures up the Christmas/holiday spirit. Cupid's Home is a piano solo arrangement of the 1898 hit pop song by Carrie Jacobs-Bond, which was originally a ballad for voice and piano. I have freely arranged this into a pulsing light jazz piece with an Intro, three sections, and a Coda; which each build in volume and rhythmic intensity. The Intro is straight from the Jacobs-Bond piece; it is the only part of the song that is. For section 1 I rhythmically augment (double the note values) of the melody and add a pulsing drone beat in the LH. In section 2 I double time the melody and syncopate it, then reharmonize it, and add harmonic movement to the still pulsing bass line. Section 3 adds syncopation and stride to the LH. The Coda is an extended riff and cadence. Pure fun! 4 page score; 1:55 minutes This piece is also found in my book, Carrie Jacobs-Bond, Popular Songs 1900-1925, a collection of 51 of her songs I have arranged for piano solo, which is also available on this site.

When I saw the Rachel, Jack, and Ashley Too episode of Black Mirror, I recognized the melody of the oddly upbeat pop song Ashley O was singing but couldn't quite place it because unconsciously I knew something was really off, and then slowly it dawned on me that it was a NIN cover, and I flipped out with utter joy that someone had just done something to me that I'm constantly trying to do to them. Every time the song played throughout the episode, I couldn't stop laughing, not just at the lyrics, but especially at a certain trite & upbeat sounding bassline and all of the different musical elements that completely changed the feel of the original. So of course I needed to write my own arrangement of that arrangement. I hope you enjoy it. The last four bars of the song are a perfect blend of alternating scales and blue notes, folding in exquisite ups and downs, and finally resolving to B major at the end.  In the chord progression, the second half of [B] and Gmaj7 (two beats after Dmaj7) in [E] and [M] are not Chick Corea's original, but he seems to use them in this arrangement.

This particular Toccata is also harmonically simple: in the key of G major with a modulation to D major and back to G major. It would be perfect for someone with fast fingers who is not a strong reader. It was written by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane for the 1944 movie "Meet Me in St. Louis", starring Judy Garland. According to an interview with the writers in 1989, when Judy first read the words she refused to sing it because the words were too depressing. Martin and Blane revised it, and that version was used in the movie. This piano solo is written for advanced intermediate level, and begins with a beautiful, flowing style, full of rich chording, and changes into a "piano bar" style, with a single line melody in the R.H. and bass and chords in the L.H. The melody is written using many triplets and a swing rhythm that is similar to the way it is sung by many famous artists. There is lots of helpful fingering, making many passages flow with ease.
