A Groovy Kind of Love is a song written by Toni Wine and Carole Bayer Sager based on a melody by the classical composer Muzio Clementi. The song was recorded to great success by The Mindbenders and Phil Collins.The title was an early use of the slang word groovy, and both women were interested in using the word because they recognized it as new and happening. Wine said, Carole came up with 'Groovy kinda… groovy kinda… groovy…' and we're all just saying, 'Kinda groovy, kinda groovy, kinda…' The Mindbenders version entered the Record Retailer chart on January 19, 1966, at number 34 before peaking at number two on March 16. It was kept from the number one spot by These Boots Are Made for Walkin' by Nancy Sinatra. It exited the chart on April 20 at a position of 37 after spending 14 weeks on the chart.

This work, written in 1994, was one of my first parodies. Taking another composer's piece and 'messing it up', so to speak, became an important preoccupation for me. Clementi (Op. 36 No. 1) obviously is the victim here, and you can easily follow the original throughout. In the first movement I added a dissonant left hand part, and the result is basically bitonal, with a few quotes added from other famous tunes. In the second movement the material is moved up two octaves to imitate a music box and, just as would happen to a real wind-up music box, the tempo gets slower and slower until......oh no! The final dominant seventh doesn't resolve! Anarchy! Finally, the last movement stays completely faithful to the original, except that every measure is transposed to a different key. It's a great ear-bender, and as Mozart says in the movie Amadeus, It's so new! And the title, 'Snotty Tina,' is a corruption of 'Sonatina.'

Incidental music composed for piano in four parts by Philip Le Bas to accompany the Japanese folk tale (ghost story) Yuki-Onna (Snow Woman). This work developed out of a cross-cultural project initiated at Morley College, London, in early 2019, aiming to create a melodrama for piano solo and spoken voice to be performed in northern Japan later in the year by young students of the piano. It is based on the ghost-story above, which is widely known in Japan. The tale was transcribed and published by Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo) in 1904 as part of his book “Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Thingsâ€, a collection that has been highly influential in expressing popular Japanese culture over the past century. Synopsis of the tale of Yuki-Onna: Two wood-cutters, Mosaku and his apprentice Minokichi, encounter a terrible snow-storm and take shelter in an empty hut by a river. The storm gets worse and worse, but they both finally fall asleep. When Minokichi wakes, he sees a woman all in white bending over Mosaku breathing bright white smoke onto his face. She then approaches Minokichi. She is very beautiful, but her eyes make him afraid. After a while she says, “I intended to do the same to you as I did to the old man, but I feel pity for you because you are a pretty young man. If you ever tell anybody what you have seen, however, I will kill you too.†And she vanishes into the snow storm. It is then that Minokichi discovers Mosaku dead on the floor of the hut. Years later Minokichi meets a beautiful girl, who calls herself O-Yuki. He falls in love with her and they live together in his house, along with his mother, who fortunately takes a liking to her new “honourable daughter-in-law.†Over the years O-Yuki gives birth to ten children and the villagers all agree that she is a wonderful person. But she is somehow different from them, as she continues to look young and fresh, despite the passing years. Minokichi often thinks of telling O-Yuki about the events of years ago, and eventually, as he is gazing at her beauty one night, he can resist it no more. He begins to tell her about the snow storm and the terrifying snow-woman. To his horror O-Yuki becomes more and more angry, and she finally says: “It was me, it was me,… and I said I would kill you if you ever told anyone! But for these children asleep here, I would do so this very moment! You had better take very good care of them; for if ever they have reason to complain of you, I will treat you as you deserve!†As she screams at him her voice becomes thin, like the crying of the wind, and she melts into a bright white mist spiraling into the roof-beams. At that moment it starts to snow, but O-Yuki is never seen again.

This fast angular piano piece (1 min. 5 sec) is the tenth in a series of impromptus inspired by the sounds of childhood, namely the soundtracks of early 90s video game systems like Nintendo. This composition captures the robotic, computerized quality that was common with many of the 8-bit soundtracks. Although composers were limited to writing thin textures, they often took advantage of the computer's ability to play virtuosic passages that would be nearly unimaginable for a living performer. The texture of this piece is almost entirely monophonic. The velocity of the 16th notes creates the impression of harmony in the same way virtuosic blue-grass flat-picking guitarist can. The greatest challenge to the performer is getting the alternating hands coordinated. Fingerings are important, but more so is deciding which hand to play specific melodic passages. Where these spots seemed most precarious, I provided suggestions. This is the eleventh piano piece (2 min. 20 sec.) in the series of impromptus inspired by sounds of childhood, namely the themes from early 90s game systems like Nintendo. Its A-section has a dark brooding character which has much to do with the highly unstable and dissonant Locrian mode in which it is written. This contrasts greatly with the triumphant and lyrical B-section which is predominantly written in the bright Lydian mode.Some performers will be initially challenged by the key signature of 6-flats. However, the repetitive nature of the left-hand ostinato will mitigate this challenge somewhat. The middle section needs to be played at a much slower tempo with a seamless transition accomplished through the ritard two-bars before the Maestoso marking. Follow my work at www.bendockery.com. Humperdinck (1854-1921) composed the opera "Hansel and Gretel" in the years 1891 and 1892, based on the German fairy tale "Hnsel und Gretel" by the Brothers Grimm.
The beautiful "Evening Prayer" would become the most popular piece from the opera, and arguably Humperdinck's most famous composition.
