I want to cross over into camp ground. The River Jordan is not in fact very deep, nor is it very wide. However, the longing to cross over it into camp ground in the promised land is very deep indeed! Based on the biblical story of Moses and the tribes of Israel wandering in the desert for forty years, this song is about exile and yearning for somewhere to belong. It applies to everyone, not just to the African-Americans who first sang this song, with their own history of heartache over so many centuries. Anyone who feels alienated by life and who is searching for inner peace is invited to respond to its soulfulness. Surprisingly - says the song - there are those who don't want to go to that gospel feast. But the song just continues its own search for the promised peace, convinced that the answer lies deep within us, perhaps across our own, personal deep river. The old African-American Spiritual Deep River is here set for piano solo in a relatively straightforward arrangement, based on the arranger's own barbershop quartet setting of the same song. It is to be played soulfully!

When the reply came back from America that he'd be happy to...I said I would only do it if Burt came over to London for the recording session. 'Yes,' came the reply. Next I said that as well as the arrangements and coming over, he had to play piano on the session. To my astonishment it was agreed that Burt would do all three. One of my favorite memories was President Ronald Reagan, a well-loved man that made America a better place. This song is a tribute to our former president. Written in C minor, this late intermediate piano solo is a fun jazz/blues piece played in a swing rhythm complete with fingering, triplets (quarter, eighth, and 16th note), grace notes, and left hand broken octaves that walk up and down the bass section of the piano. The bridge changed to the relative Major of Eb and is an old-time (Happy Days style) rock-n-roll. I think you'll have a lot of fun playing this piece as well as getting some toes tapping. Great for recitals, Assisted Living entertainment, and just for fun. Copyright 2010 by Amy J. Snyder.

Some of the text may date back as far as the 18th century. Although it has been used in communion since at least the Civil War, that may not have been its original intent.I have heard lectures given by researchers who claim that many African-American spirituals contain coded messages, intended for slaves, about secret meetings, clandestine worship services, and escape plans. Some songs are even said to contain maps.The texts are innocuous on the surface, so as to not alert the slave owners. Some of the double meanings seem obvious in retrospect:When Israel was in Egypt land,Let My people go.Oppressed so hard they could not stand,Let My people go.And:Steal away, steal away, steal away to Jesus!Steal away, steal away home. I ain’t got long to stay here.In Let Us Break Bread Together, this curious line may have a double meaning:When I fall on my knees, with my face to the rising sunCommunion needn’t take place at daybreak, nor while facing east. The lyrics could be a pointer to a specific time and place for a prohibited meeting.Whatever its original meaning, this and many other African-American spirituals are now an important part of many worship traditions.
