To mark its 250th anniversary, the Schott publishing house has dug up and reedited treasures from its historical publishing archives. This anthology is aimed at professional musicians and advanced amateurs interested in interesting new discoveries off the standard repertoire. It mainly contains works from the Romantic era: virtuoso pièces de résistance and encores, expressive character pieces, gems of salon music or elaborate arrangements of well-known (opera) melodies. Many of the original compositions and arrangements were written by major piano virtuosos of the 19th century. Maurice Bejart's great admiration for the films of Federico Fellini and their accompanying music prompted the French choreographer to seek the opportunity to collaborate with composer Nino Rota who remained Fellini's musical alter ego throughout his life. The music for Le Moliere imaginaire, a comedie-ballet in two acts in commemoration of the great French dramatist, was created during an extended period in the summer of 1976 when Bejart and Rota had allotted almost a month to be devoted solely to this project. The version of this music for piano originated during the collaborative working phase of the two artists and appears in abbreviated form at the beginning of the ballet when the curtain rises on the first act.

The 48 Preludi of the Venetian composer Renato de Grandis (1927-2008) were created, in large part, in the years 1998-2002. It was only subsequently that he arranged them in 4 cycles of 12 preludes each, while also drawing back on older compositions. Written in a traditional pianistic style, they are short sketches which are sometimes characterized by musical thoughts, sometimes by moods or natural phenomena. The fourth volume presented here is once again divided into two cycles of 6 preludes each, with the first cycle paying tribute to the landscapes and towns of Friuli north of Venice.

The Mozart volume in the Schott Piano Collection series has been one of the standard works in music teaching for a long time. To this day Theodor Kirchner (1823-1904) has failed to gain the recognition he deserves. A friend of Johannes Brahms and Clara Schumann, the artist has been labelled a mere follower of Schumann. His demanding yet never superficially virtuosic music for piano displays an highly individual range of tender lyrical sentiments. Kirchner's writing already hints at the approaching revolution of High and Late Romantik, thus pointing in the direction of Scriabin and Max Reger (the latter greatly idolized by Kirchner).

Paul Dessau, whose collaboration with Bertolt Brecht made a significant impression in the consciousness of music-lovers, is an extremely versatile composer. Two short pieces from his piano works are now published for the first time: the unconventional study on "B-A-C-H" and the "Intermezzo breve", whose tempo marking "Grotewohl tempo" serves to point its dedication to the politician Otto Grotewohl.

The Italian Giovanni Sgambati received music tuition from an early age and gave his first public concert performances as a child. When Liszt came to Rome in 1861, Sgambati became his student. At the opening of the Sala Dante in 1966 he conducted Liszt's Dante Symphony and later travelled with him to Munich, where he also became acquainted with Richard Wagner's music. Sgambati's first song album was published by Schott in 1870, followed by many piano works, chamber works, symphonies and church music compositions. The transcription 'Melodie de Gluck', published in 1881 (plate number 23209), is dedicated to the 'Dance of the Blessed Spirits', a ballet in the second act of the opera 'Orfeo ed Euridice', and is still a popular encore piece by pianists including Evgeny Kissin and Yuja Wang.

The works of Scott Joplin, probably the most successful ragtime composer, are undoubtedly among the timeless classics and standard works in piano lessons. This volume of the series "Schott Piano Classics" contains a carefully selected compilation of his 20 best-known ragtimes in the original version. In addition, the edition contains a "School of Ragtime" written by Joplin himself, in which the stylistics and special playing techniques of ragtime are explained and illustrated with practical playing exercises.

The pieces mirror a kaleidoscope of feelings and sensations: witty and clever, elegantly sarcastic, dreamily floating, painterly and impressionistic, and restrained and melancholic.

For Alexander Goehr, like Schumann, teaching and fostering new ideas and
talent has been an integral part of his life as a composer. In these 15 pieces he uses models (by Bach, Handel, Mozart and Schumann) to explore the creative act. "The disorders of the imagination, recorded as they present themselves, are to be ordered and extended in the hope of 'reaching a symmetry', or a 'true gestalt' [in the words of W.H. Auden, whose poem New Year Letter, 1940, provided the title and context for this project]. But the other way round might work too (and for many does): taking a symmetry (matrix) and making from it a luxuriant disorder. I hope that the possibility of comparing each piece with its appropriate model may give a particular pleasure, not unlike my pleasure in composing in this way."
