The title of this 14-minute piece reflects the fact that it was commissioned by my dear late friend Edwin Good to perform on his beautiful Thomas and Barbara Wolf copy of the very first piano. (Cristofori, 1700). It is playable on the modern piano as well. The movements are as follows: 1. In Medias Res: Fanfare (begins at 0:00 in the mp3 file) is a showy, energetic, brief, humorous beginning.2. Ricercar (begins at 0:33 in the mp3 file) uses the imitative techniques of 16th century instrumental music, with modern harmonies.3. For JSB (begins at 3:25 in the mp3 file) was composed in loving homage to Johann Sebastian Bach.4. Burlesca (begins at 6:15 in the mp3 file) is another moment of humor and energy.5. Nocturne (begins at 8:04 in the mp3 file) is, of course, night music.6. Passacaglia (begins at 11:04 in the mp3 file) continues without break from the Nocturne. In the left hand, a pattern of several notes repeats many times, organizing the music. Simultaneously, the right hand quotes fragments from the other movements.NOTE: The mp3 file is automated, but gives a rough sense of the music.

Published by Niska Music Publishing (A0.1125803). I first became familiar with this tune in high school choir when we performed “Sing We Now of Christmas†for a holiday concert. I did not know that it had originated as a French carol from the late 15th/early16th century and like many of my favorite carols, it is set in a minor key. I had forgotten all about it until a friend suggested arranging it for this collection. As I began working on the piece, I was torn between staying true to the feel of the original and this growing sense I had to write something more dramatic and more inspired by one of my favorite composers, Ralph Vaughn Williams. I chose a much slower tempo than the French carol and as a result it has more depth and a sense of gravitas, reflecting the mystery of the birth of Christ. At the end of the first verse, I transition to the parallel major key and the music takes on a more lighthearted and almost dance-like character as the stable is visited by shepherds and kings alike to see for themselves the sleeping child and enjoy the sense of wonder and amazement at such a scene. The music then moves back to the opening and the original key as the kings offer their gifts to the babe and prepare to return home. Even though it is in a minor key, there is an overpowering grandeur in this prelude reflecting the events to come in His short life on this earth, but even more the importance to all that his sacrifice would bring. There is a brief coda that returns to the major key with the promise of hope offered by one so small.

Composed in dedication to Prof. Bernhard Klapprott and Prof. Myriam Eichberger as well as their students at the Early Music Department of The University of Music founded by Franz Liszt in Weimar, Germany.During the early 21st century, the Weimar Rathaus, or City Hall, marked each quarter hour by chiming the so-called Westminster Quarters, clearly announced in the opening measures of The Bells of Weimar. This piece is a re-working of Renaissance composer William Byrd's The Bells, which appeared in The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, an important collection of 16th-17th-century keyboard music from England. I composed this etude near the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in early summer 2020 when we were all at home on lockdown. I'm not sure if the doom and gloom of the unknowns surrounding the disease, prior to vaccinations being available, influenced the dark mood of this piece or not. I also tend to like minor sounds and I am an emotionally sensitive person. This piece is for advanced solo piano and includes technical aspects such as arpeggios, scales, large leaps with chords, increasing speed from 16th note to 32nd note runs, and an elongated melody over the chord progressions and arpeggiation. I hope you enjoy this piece!

The Drumfire Was Incessant, and Continued All Night With Unabated Fury is a solo piano piece, inspired by Newton Wanliss’s harrowing account of the Battle of Pozieres in his 1929 war biography The History of the 14th Battalion, A.I.F. The Battle of Pozieres ran between July and August 1916, as part of the First World War’s Somme Offensive. The composition focuses on the days leading up to August 9th, 1916, when my great-great uncle Private Leslie Robins, an infantryman in the 14th Battalion, was shot and wounded.In the early stages of writing the piece, whilst conducting preliminary research into the Battle of Pozieres, I was struck by the disparity between the British High Command’s notion of formulating a ‘plan’ for the battle, and the actuality of what occurred once soldiers ‘went over the top’ into no-man’s land. This dichotomous concept – exerting control over an inherently fluid and dynamic situation – I found to be most intriguing. It segued neatly into my aesthetic explorations of the role of improvisation (a dynamic process) within a larger notated context (a controlled environment). I decided that this dichotomy would play a fundamental role within the piece.Australian pianist Zubin Kanga commissioned The Drumfire… for his 2012 Spectrum concert series. The piece was given its world premiere on August 11th 2012 at the Melbourne Recital Centre, and was also performed at the Independent Theatre in Sydney on August 16th 2012.

Published by Niska Music Publishing (A0.1077073). Whereas Naturszenen No.16 is the aftermath of a forest fire, this scene takes place during the height of the inferno. One cannot escape the sense of a ravenous hunger found in the incessant motion of the piece as the flames leap from tree to tree, engulfing all in their path. The air is choked with ash and a heat that cannot be withstood. The flames reach ever higher driven by winds created as a result of the intense heat. Nothing can stop the destruction until all sources of fuel have been devoured. This piece evokes a definite feeling of the late Classical/early Romantic period and the technical demands on the pianist are not insignificant. While there is a melody to be brought out in the right hand amidst the constant swirl of 16th notes, the left hand leaps about to fill in the harmonic underpinnings.

Harmonically and melodically, it's in a jazz style, though rhythmically, it's almost nothing but straight 16ths. The tune (in the left hand) reminds me of Thelonious Monk.
