Homage to Beethoven includes five main themes which overlap fugally to some degree, however this music is not intended to directly reflect the tantot recherchée elements of Beethoven’s composition. It is more specifically inspired by the tantot libre angularity, the exquisitely controlled chaos, and the agonized outrage apparent in Beethoven’s controversial Fugue. The final Lento section is intended to express uneasy grief over the price of Beethoven’s newfound independence: the death of innocence. (Detailed program notes available.)

Elements of Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Prokofiev, Scriabin, Chopin, Sondheim and others are found throughout the collection. This set of preludes was written from 2019-2020. Numbers 3, 11, 21 and 24 were written during the COVID-19 pandemic while all the rest were pre-pandemic compositions.

Published by Zellev Music (A0.1315857). Composer bio:Paul Abraham Dukas ( 1 October 1865 – 17 May 1935) was a French composer, critic, scholar and teacher. A studious man of retiring personality, he was intensely self-critical, having abandoned and destroyed many of his compositions. His best-known work is the orchestral piece The Sorcerer's Apprentice (L'apprenti sorcier), the fame of which has eclipsed that of his other surviving works. Among these are the opera Ariane et Barbe-bleue, his Symphony in C and Piano Sonata in E-flat minor, the Variations, Interlude and Finale on a Theme by Rameau (for solo piano), and a ballet, La Péri.In the first decade of the 20th century, following the immense success of his orchestral work The Sorcerer's Apprentice, Dukas completed two complex and technically demanding large-scale works for solo piano: the Piano Sonata, dedicated to Saint-Saëns, and Variations, Interlude and Finale on a Theme by Rameau (1902). In Dukas's piano works critics have discerned the influence of Beethoven, or, Beethoven as he was interpreted to the French mind by César Franck. Both works were premiered by Édouard Risler, a celebrated pianist of the era.In an analysis of the work in The Musical Quarterly in 1928, the critic Irving Schwerké wrote:The Sonata is classical in structure and in four movements, connected more by mutual formal perfection and nobility of thought than by cyclic procedures. This is my first piano sonata, heavily influenced by Schubert and Beethoven. The Spring Sonata is a tale of a horseman gallopping through the spring nature. The first movement depicts that gallop through the different parts of the countryside. The main motive here being the big main street. He gallops through the flower meadows, the green forrest and the wheatfields. In the second movement our horseman leaves the big street and rides through a birch grove, past a lake and into a small village right past the singing churchgoers before returning to the street in the third movement, where he rides into the big city.

Three Ivory Magnolia Fantasies (2003) for piano solo is a three movement work largely inspired by Dr. Gary Powell Nash’s experiences in Mississippi as Associate Professor of Music at Mississippi Valley State University. Movement one, titled Buddy’s Path is a result of the two main premises of the movement which include blues riffs of Buddy Guy and Beethoven’s Pathetique Sonata. Buddy’s Path begins with a slow introduction and transitions to faster music. After section 2, the slow intro music returns and once again transitions to section 1 material, alluding to the formal structure from Movement 1 of the Pathetique Sonata. Movement two, titled Dedication, a slow movement is also ternary, with A, B, cadenza and A’. It begins with cadenza-like passages, using 32 note rhythms and then moves to slower paced music, with longer note values, although actually marked at a slightly faster tempo. The B section continues the slow paced music and progresses to a Chopin-like cadenza, which closes the B section. The A’ section returns to the slower paced music with longer note values. Movement three, titled Fast Blues on the Wall is based on a blues tune titled On the Wall, an upbeat and fast tempo tune demonstrating the barrelhouse blues tradition. Using a ternary design, the A and A’ sections of Fast Blues on the Wall feature a doubled twelve bar blues-like progression where the corresponding phrases in a standard twelve bar blues progression are doubled in regards to measure length.

But while my etudes as a whole are loosely modeled after his, this piece, composed in 1992, is as stylistically remote from Chopin as he was from, say, Beethoven. My thirds etude is mellifluous., yearning, and deeply lyrical. It doesn't sound like an etude. It sounds like a distant song that just happens to be based on thirds and just happens to be quite difficult to play. Yes, virtuoso, no show-offy. Have fun.

Black keys and white are co-ordinated between the hands. Rhythm may offset their simultaneous sounding, but that concept pervades all four movements. This first movement uses a Beethoven-like motive, and also LVB's meticulous developmental procedures. There is a middle section with a contrasting key and figuration, but the symmetry and topographical mirroring are strongest here. Advanced to Advanced Intermediate level, as it the entire Sonata. The Carol of the Bells embedded as the middle voice throughout the O Holy Night portion should be a consistently joyous ringing that provides the background and foundation of the majestic O Holy Night melody. The chromatic scales took inspiration from Liszt, wherein he frequently embeds arpeggios or scales of some sort within a surrounding outer melody. The violent nature of the left hand arpeggios with the chromatic scales reminds me of Sturm und Drang, reminiscent of Liszt and also Beethoven, my two favorite composers other than Gershwin. You can sense a little bit of Gershwin even in the dense chords before the free cadenza that leads to the clear and ringing open F Major chord that restarts the carol of the bells at the a tempo (after the cadenza).

Ten Variations for piano in G major on the bass of the Aria from J. S. Bach's Goldberg Variations, beginning directly with the first variation, which includes the theme in the bass. Neoclassical composition, with some Neo-baroque hints due to the theme, and some subtle allusions to the other great variation cycle, Beethoven's Diabelli Variations. Most of the variations are treated in invertible counterpoint (of course made easier by a more relaxed harmonic language) and, while including all the notes of the theme, transform it a lot through various moods.
