When I moved to Oklahoma from Missouri, I was amazed at the variety of colors in the sunsets over the Great Plains. These sunsets served as the basis of Under the Oklahoma Sky. My aim was to represent a day through several sections, dawn, sunrise, morning, clouds, rain, rainbows, evening, and sunset. In addition to original melodic material, the work also uses the SLANE hymn tune, most familiar as the tune to Be Thou My Vision to represent feelings of awe when experiencing the sublimity of nature.

This movement of the Pastoral Symphony has 3 movements combined together, Happy Gathering of the Country Folk, Thunderstorm, and Shepherds' Song; Cheerful and Thankful Feelings after the Storm. I added some notes in the certain spots to help give more movement and sustain the sound to reflect the overall atmosphere of the original orchestra version. I also simplified some of the accompaniment so that the piece isn't too difficult to perform as well as adding a few bars of rest. In hypochondriasis, the patient doubts and distrusts the doctors' diagnosis, and a doctor's reassurance about their complete medical evaluation is unconvincing.The piece depicts the patients' feelings such as fear, anxiety, and disbelief. The rhythmic and thematic (including specific pitch sets) materials represent this emotional complexity in the context of doctor shopping. Many short musical gestures are agitated, fugitive, and aggressive, yet they are also emotional, expressive and dramatic. These active motions seek a solution. Each of the six short movements contains their own motivic ideas, but are always unified to a central point. A certain pitch, such as D#, represents the positive desire of the mind.Duration: ca. 7'40'' Â

Cornus - A Fantasy Ballade for Piano, composed by Aris Antoniades.Cornus is the name of the forest that surrounds the Army Unit I was stationed at, during the first year of my military service back in my homeland, Cyprus. The magical sounds of nature and the myths surrounding this forest were what kept me company during many cold, endless nights of sentry guard duty. On such nights, I would often let my imagination soar, making up stories and music. It was during one of those moments of spontaneous inspiration that I came up with the opening motif for this piece.The piece tries to musically depict the different feelings a questing knight experiences when he sets off into the depths of the forest and back. Just like all typical chivalric romances, the hero discovers something remarkable while he travels - something that has the power to change him forever. Although by the end of the story the hero returns back to where he started, he is now a different person since the adventure forced him to undergo a catharsis.

He authored a song dedicated to the Soviet Pacific Fleet, Above the Bleak Kuriles Range (Ðад Ñерой КурильÑкой грÑдою) (lyrics by Nikolai Bukin), a work which combined elements of heroic devotion to the Motherland with pensiveness and longing for the far-away family and its comforts.In reflecting on the sources of inspiration for his songs, Serafim Tulikov later confessed that it came mostly from the reminiscences of his homeland, Kaluga, and most of the elements within the songs were present in Kaluga. In the early 1960s, Tulikov would write a song dedicated to Kaluga, properly entitled The Town of My Youth (Город юноÑти моей) (lyrics by Mikhail Pliatskovsky), a sweet and unassuming yet sincere and heartfelt song.During Khrushchev's Virgin Lands Campaign of bringing the vast steppes of Kazakhstan and South Siberia into agricultural use, Tulikov composed another well known song, Komsomol Direction (КомÑомольÑÐºÐ°Ñ Ð¿ÑƒÑ‚ÐµÐ²ÐºÐ°) (lyrics by Tsezar Solodar), which declared: On the go! From the Japanese “bukimi no tani†(first used by Dr. Mori in 1970), “uncanny valley†refers to the concept that imperfect humanoid objects will evoke uncanny or uneasy feelings in a viewer. Similarly, I believe that there can be an uneasy disconnect in concert venues when listening to pre-recorded sound, especially as it begins to approximate the sounds of real, on-stage performers. Simulacrum explores this concept by intermingling both a live and pre-recorded piano into a singular texture. Blurring and obscuring the lines between what is human and what is digital, this work actively tasks the listener with reconciling the two aspects into a unified listening experience. The first movement of the Pastoral Symphony is called Awakening of Cheerful Feelings upon Arrival in the Country. I added some notes in the certain spots to help give more movement and sustain the sound to reflect the overall atmosphere of the original orchestra version. I also simplified some of the accompaniment so that the piece isn't too difficult to perform. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q582538). The initial stimulus for this set of pieces was a painting by Kandinsky, Composition VII (1913). The painting represents a period when he was concerned with emotional, abstract paintings of two sorts: (a) improvisations (â??unconscious, spontaneous expression of inner character, the non-material natureâ?? that contain no recognizable objects, but coloured shapes that express feelings) and (b) compositions (â??an expression of a slowly formed inner feeling, tested and worked over repeatedlyâ?? that include recognizable objects, but ones that have been â??strippedâ?? and â??veiledâ??). Taking the latter idea as a starting point I began to mould and form a tripartite piece which conveyed the energy and colour from canvas to notes. The movement titles are derived from the number of notes in the note rows for each movement, i.e. Etude Four uses a note row made up of four notes. © Daniel Kidane, 2023.
