Piano Solo - Level 5 - SKU: A0.1090879 By Audra McDonald. By Randy Newman. Arranged by Sjaak Douma. Blues,Jazz,Pop. Score. 4 pages. Sjaak Douma #695019. Published by Sjaak Douma (A0.1090879). This arrangement starts out with the original intro chords played as a moderate blues shuffle, further altered by gospel passing chords and crushed blue notes. From here, the arrangement continues by use of improvisational right-hand blues figures alternating and interweaving with the original melody. Alternatively, the second verse is treated with a baroqueian melodic sequence accompanied by a circle of fifths progression, offering a classical variation of the same material. Concluding the arrangement, an extended piano technique is used in between sustained chords by percussive use of the fallboard with the fingers, supplying rhythmic support to its final drawn-out harmonies.

Piano Solo - Level 5 - SKU: A0.828227 Composed by John Hatton. Arranged by Paul Thurmond. 20th Century,Baroque,Christian,Sacred. Score. 7 pages. Paul Thurmond #4968929. Published by Paul Thurmond (A0.828227). Tune: DUKE STREETUse: Prelude, PostludeOne Sunday my church was singing Jesus Shall Reign Where’er the Sun as the opening hymn. It’s our tradition that the last stanza of a hymn is sung in unison, so that I as the organist can change the harmonization and keep things interesting. Sometimes I know ahead of time what I’m going to do, and sometimes I make it up on the spot.On this particular morning I planned on being spontaneous. (Can spontaneity be planned?) When we got to the final stanza, I threw on the 16′ pedal reed and went to town.I don’t know if this is the case for all musicians, but while I’m playing my brain is working on several different levels. Most of these are involved in actually playing the music, but there’s also a running commentary on how things are going. This commentary is usually really boring: It’s going okay. It’s going okay. It’s going okay. Sometimes the messages are more interesting: Uh-oh. She just dropped her mute. I missed that chord; remember to circle it when we’re done. My page turner appears to be on fire. So: We’re in the final stanza of Jesus Shall Reign Where’er the Sun. Big, majestic hymn. Over a hundred congregants and choir members are enthusiastically singing in unison. I’m leading them from the organ with an improvised accompaniment that involves all of my limbs. It’s fair to say that I was concentrating hard.Suddenly the commentary part of my brain breaks in: Dude, your feet are totally playing Canon in D. Cool!Canon in D is the most famous work of Johann Pachelbel, a German composer who preceded Bach by a few decades. It’s overused at weddings, but it’s actually a really good piece of music. The original is for three violins and a basso continuo part, which would usually have been played by harpsichord and cello. In this case, the basso continuo plays the same eight measures again and again throughout the piece. This technique of repetition is called a ground bass. While that’s going on, the violins play several different themes on top of it.When I was improvising that Sunday, my feet had accidentally wandered into that ground bass part, which happened to fit nicely with the melody we were singing. During the sermon (sorry Pastor!) I started going through the violin themes in my head, seeing if any of them could also match up with the hymn tune. Some of them worked and some didn’t. I decided to write a sort of theme and variations, where the hymn tune appears in various forms. Sometimes it’s played along with one of the violin themes, and sometimes a violin theme serves as an interlude on its own. And except for one passage, the left hand is always playing some version of the basso continuo theme. I also changed the meter from 4/4 to 3/4 to make it more interesting. It culminates in a climax worthy of a king. I hope you enjoy it.

Piano Solo - Level 5 - SKU: A0.847962 By Simon And Garfunkel. By Traditional English Ballad. Arranged by Timothy Stapay. Baroque,Contest,Festival,Film/TV,Folk,Traditional. Score. 6 pages. Timothy Stapay #454662. Published by Timothy Stapay (A0.847962). Scarborough Fair is a traditional English ballad. A famous version was recorded by Simon and Garfunkel. The lyrics of Scarborough Fair appear to have something in common with a Scottish ballad titled The Elfin Knight (Child Ballad #2, collected by Francis James Child, which has been traced as far back as 1670. In this ballad, an elf threatens to abduct a young woman to be his lover unless she can perform an impossible task (For thou must shape a sark to me / Without any cut or heme, quoth he); she responds with a list of tasks that he must first perform (I have an aiker of good ley-land / Which lyeth low by yon sea-strand). Dozens of versions existed by the end of the 18th century. A number of older versions refer to locations other than Scarborough Fair, including Wittingham Fair, Cape Ann, twixt Berwik and Lyne, etc. Many versions do not mention a place name and are often generically titled (The Lovers' Tasks, My Father Gave Me an Acre of Land. The references to the traditional English fair, Scarborough Fair and the refrain parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme date to 19th-century versions, and the refrain may have been borrowed from the ballad Riddles Wisely Expounded, which has a similar plot. O, where are you going? To Scarborough fair, Savoury sage, rosemary, and thyme; Remember me to a lass who lives there, For once she was a true love of mine. And tell her to make me a cambric shirt, Savoury sage, rosemary, and thyme, Without any seam or needlework, And then she shall be a true love of mine. And tell her to wash it in yonder dry well, Savoury sage, rosemary, and thyme, Where no water sprung, nor a drop of rain fell, And then she shall be a true love of mine..

Piano Solo - Level 5 - SKU: A0.984695 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by John M. Honeycutt. Baroque. Score. 6 pages. Music Innovators Workshop #4356271. Published by Music Innovators Workshop (A0.984695). This is a very interesting 4 voice fugue. I like a lot - but I can't play it on this tablature - even though I can play it on traditional notation. I wonder if it's because I learned to play it first on the traditional notation, or if the complexity of the piece makes the tablature less effective than it is on less complex pieces. Actually, i'm fascinated by the way it looks on the tablature. The weaving of the melody lines is very interesting. It really is a visual work of art! 6 Pages. This piece is notated on a vertically oriented tablature called a key map. Key maps are intended to SHOW you (visually) which keys to play by matching (mapping) the locations of the keys on the keyboard. >>> The group of 12 keys from Middle C up to B form what we call the green Octave Group (There are 7 of these identical groups on the piano distinguished by their colors and locations.) The key map staff is based on an octave group of the keyboard. For each key map octave group, the 5 vertical lines of the staff stand for the 5 matching black KEYS. >>> Staff lines ARE SPACED to match the horizontal spacing of the black keys on the keyboard The notes for black keys are placed ON these staff lines. The notes for the white keys are placed BETWEEN the lines. >>> The notes of a key map move to the left and right to indicate change in PITCH and down the page to indicate the passing of TIME (rhythm). The vertical length of each note is proportional to the time (in beats) that the sound requires. If you want to know more about this beautiful key map notation, you might consider reviewing our article describing how this notation works, entitled: Getting Started With Key Maps for the Piano. It contains an explanation of how key maps work and includes a number of examples. 16 pages. It is promotionally priced at only $1.99. (Actually, you can read the fist few pages simply by going to the look inside pages of the article.)
